King of Amps is correct.

The seller may have got the service folks to agree, but must have doen some fast talking or funny descriptions.

The seller says the brass plate went "in the white square".

Bullcrap. It was attached to the rear screen as mentioned above.

The white paper label was never on SLM units, but its on that one.

I also think that is probably an MTI version.

The seller is silly, since if it were a PRE SLM version, it would be worth MORE than as one of the very first of the CRATEPEGS

Seeing those pics reminds me of another thing: the tolex. Only the old ones have the smooth black tolex. Newer ones have the course stuff.

Yeah, the supposedly shunkworks one may have been re-covered? Looks the same as # 001, IIRC.

But, you can see the number tag, the lack of the white paper label, and the fact that stuff is printed in the box at right.

Nope, the seller of the "skunkworks" amp does NOT have a gen-you-whine CRATEPEG.

They have something MUCH BETTER, AND THEY DON"T EVEN KNOW IT

Someone might get a good deal on an older unit when the collectors shy away not wanting a CRATEPEG.

But I agree, that ain't a skunkworks unit as far as I can see. The seller doesn't even have the right info about the number plate.

I emailed our service manager about the references to Dave and Bob in the ad. Haven't heard back, but I think there was something screwy there, maybe a little confusion.

I know both of those guys, and Dave at least ought to know what one is or isn't, since I am pretty sure I recall him being here at the time of the 500 units.

The biggest difference between the SLM (Skunkworks) and the MTI version of the SVT should be the transformers. The MTI will be Japanese and have their own unique electrical code. The Skunkworks should have Electrical Windings transformers made in Chicago and have a 682 number stamped somewhere on the top of the transformer. Also most of the other components on the MTI will also be made in Japan the easiest to see will be some of the capacitors which chances are will be Elna Cerafines also made in Japan.

That ebay SVT is an MTI for sure. The MTI SVTs are generally regarded as inferior to the Skunkworks, and certainly to the 70's SVT. The skunk is certainly no typical 'cratepeg'.
