Beyma drivers

You do too;)
I've been using a 1260 off and on, alone and paired with other junk (see profile) for quite a while now.
A Mesa walkabout, + 1260+Mesa 115 just flat out kills, and the 1260 by itself is no slouch at all.
The 1580 is a great concept-(in fact full range three way cabs are a great concept, see the Carvin 1503 megathread)-I've not heard one tho.

I don't know anything about these cabs... never have known anyone who gigs one. However, that 1580 with a neo Beyma driver in 4ohm version looks like it might kill. QUOTE]

The chances of all these driver combinations being optimal in the above cabinet is zilch.
True, but an interesting question is, could this really be more of a matter of preference than right or wrong? I mean if all the driver options basically revolve around a certain point of "technically ideal", maybe different people's imperfect ears might actually prefer one vs another even tho maybe even all of them are not technically ideal in a test chamber in one or more ways?

Anybody seen a vertical 4x10?
Nope. It would "look dorky" or some such silliness. A vertical 410 also kicks the snot out of a commercial 410 in off-axis response. But if you want one, you have to have one custom built (read: engineered) for you. This is not a "safe" visual and is too risky for a commercial product.
Actually, in a sense, this does exist, and I don't think it looks dorky AT ALL. I've stacked a pair of 210 cabs vertically like this with Edens, EA's (which are actually designed to be stacked that way as well), and even Avatars. I prefer that config for many reasons, but I have to admit, the "traditional" 410 is not that distant of a second choice for me, since it does seem to work well enough.

I also like the smaller stage footprint that cab arrangement has, since I mostly play typical clubs.

I know two separate cabs are not the same as one (unless it's internally isolated that way of course), but I think it's comparable enough for this post anyway.

On the flip side, a highly engineered cabinet such as Bill's Omni15...
Without a full grille, the O15 looks dorky too. The dork factor disappears when you fire it up.
LOL!!!

I'm not nearly as concerned about the "dork factor" as you seem to be, but it's an interesting point. :)

When you're dealing with hi-fi then there is a technical right and wrong. But with bass cabs it does come down more to personal taste - there is quite a range of alignments that are workable for any given speaker depending on how you wish to use it. If you look at the Eminence website many of the speakers have recommended cabs you can build for them. The 3015LF has five different alignments shown, but there an infinite number of choices in between these. As with all design choices, there are pros and cons to each one, so the challenge is to choose which pros matter most to you and which cons matter least.

The killer with many bass cabs is that if even if you chose the most true alignment, the poor power handling in the lows of most bass cabs would mean the speakers farting out too easily, hence the undersized cab approach is often a wise one.

Exactly.

I just wanted to make sure we didn't lose sight of the application at hand, which I do think "changes the rules" a bit, so to speak.

I forgot about that!!!!!

So Bill, would you generally recommend against Beyma drivers just as you did the Eminence Kappa Pro's for instrument amplification?
Not if they're properly researched to be sure they're correct for the application. But if you just will-nilly toss them into a box you may end up disappointed. That's what happened with the Kappa Pro 10, a driver that has poor low frequency response, yet was used by more than one manufacturer based solely on their high power rating. :scowl:

Exactly.

Now that we've established that a bit of 'wiggle room' exists regarding the design of bass-specific speaker enclosures, I hope Marc Serio doesn't mind me quoting him regarding this issue since his products are mentioned in this thread. This from an email reply.

"We design our cabinets around the speaker, not the other way around. In doing so, you find a driver that does what you want it to do, and build the cabinet that compliments it."

This and the the fact they build to order would lend some credence to the idea that speaker models aren't indiscriminately swapped around.

Ken,

I've been using a 1260 alone for a straight up 4-piece classic rock band for almost 20 months...no complaints with that application at all. Obviously we have a very nice PA, but the cab does a nice job even by itself in those smaller clubs that don't really need bass reinforcement.

One way is to look at it from the preference point of view, and given their range of cabinets, I'd say they are trying to cover the market from that perspective of marketing - "want a 1X12, a 2X12, a 3X10 we have 'em' approach", "want an Eminence, Beyma or Precision Devices we have em...". I suspect identity and visuals are more important than an ideal sonic goal.

But if they say 'upgrade' surely they must be implying something better, and the point here is that it really may not be so for any particular bass player's playing style. How do we know that it is better for this or that style of playing? I think it is misleading that an more expensive driver = better. I'm not sure these variables help their brand image recognition either.

Precision Devices are expensive here in the UK as well, and typically cost about twice an Eminence, despite being manufactured in the UK. They have the same sort of reputation that because they are expensive and Turbosound uses their drivers therefore any Precision Devices driver must be great in any box. You see this 'issue' in the PA market here. It's got PD so it must be better.... and PD makes a lot of (or used to they got bought up) drivers; some of their 10" drivers are really mid range drivers and largely useless for bass guitar use in multiples like 4X10. In the UK yes I have heard of bass players duped into buying four expensive PD mid range 10s to "upgrade" their 4X10 box.

Fellow Players,

I recently played a concert in a 1500 seat venue using (1) one Dr. Bass standard 2460 being fed by a BBE-Bmax and one channel of a PLX1804.

They didn't need to run any bass thru the mains. Sound guy said "what a sweet bass wave coming off the stage"!

Marc's 2460 is a unit that far exceeds the sum of it's components!

True. Until I read much of this thread, I thought all Beyma drivers were categorically better quality products than Eminence. Now, all I can say is, it's possible the specific Beyma drivers DR offers might be higher quality than the specific Eminence drivers they use by default, but we don't know that for sure without knowing the Beyma and Eminence models and digging deeper, since lots of other factors affect price without affecting quality (exchange rates, shipping, demand/supply, etc).

Great points about PD "perception", too.

Cool
What is the spec on your 2460?
Neo's or Ceramic how bout ohms ?
Did you leave it on the floor or raise it ?
Did you have to stand near the cab?

These are all imporatant factors for my mix/gear. thanx

The proof of one's convictions boils down to voting with their wallet.

So... I just ordered two 3015LF, two Alpha 8MRA, and crossover components to build a pair of Omni15. One is for the bass player in the band where I play keyboards, the other is dual-purpose for either my keyboard or bass use.

For lighter weight and dork-avoidance, I'm doing these with grille cloth instead of perforated steel. This requires extending the sides/ends another inch to allow for the grille frame.

Note: my 1260 is Kappa 12LF loaded; not beyma neo.
The low end it puts out is massive, the three way design works really well.

Bill F. has me going with nothing but Eminence drivers. I don't care what they say about drivers from other countries, Beyma, RCF, B&C, or whathave you. They might be ok, but they didn't help fill the bellies of my Rebel friends. I want to keep Eminence in business. It's the last GOOD speaker mgr. we have left. I'm all for giving them ALL of my business no matter what happens, and I am extremely happy with all of their products. My entire PA system is all Eminence, as is every monitor and bass cabinet I own, and I'm proud to say it. I just had to say it. Were losing all our damn jobs as it is now. Buy Eminence you guys.

Ya, I've never had a problem with Eminence. I've never been one for nationalism when it comes to products, though. I buy what gets the job done at the best price. If it's American, great. If not, so be it. I didn't see Americans lining up to keep my business afloat when I had one, so I see no reason to show that loyalty to others.

Folks, let's tread carefully here... this could get ugly, and I'd really not like it to. I'm enjoying what I'm learning from this thread so far.
