Beyma drivers

Going bare is OK until Greenpeace takes a shot across yer bow and bullhorns "awright buddy, where didja get the whale skin..."

I don't care for cabs without grilles, because they don't look finished to my eyes. Cloth is less costly to buy, and certainly less costly to ship. I bought a few sheets of 4x4' perforated steel grill for $85USD, and was charged $105 to ship it. Even at $3.50 per gallon, it would have been cheaper to drive down to San Francisco with the trailer, and pick it up.

I normally prefer steel grilles when the drivers are exposed, but the Omni15 only exposes the horn mouths. Cloth should do the job nicely. I'm building a pair of Tallboys.

Since this thread has all but fizzled out, I hope you guys dont mind a little hijack ... :)

Beyma drivers are primarily PA oriented. Most of them don't have the rising midrange response typical of musical instrument drivers, making a dedicated midrange driver an absolute necessity IMO.

Bill, could you please point out where in the response curves below the distinction for the suitability as musical instrument drivers is ?

All graphs are Em12's in order to keep the patriotically emotionalized debate (Beyma/B&C/BMS etc vs. Eminence) out of the equation. But knowing what makes a driver (un)suitable for musical instrument amplification would be transferable to other makes....

Bill, uh, I'm almost embarrassed to labour my point.... but...
is flat up to 2.5k ok ? or does it have to rise ?
The problem with plots is that they're on-axis, while off-axis is what counts. At a moderate 30 degrees off-axis 12s will be down 6dB to 10dB from on-axis. If you start with a peak at 2.5kHz you end up with a good enough response off-axis to get by without a mid driver. Start with flat response to 2.5kHz on-axis and the off-axis will be too weak to get along without a mid driver IMO.

I have read in the DR.Bass thread a review of the 1580 saying the bottom sounded pillowey with the standard speakers. I have not heard the cab myself but I am considering one. The problem is thats not the tone I'm looking for. That description leads me to believe that there is no definition in the sound and it won't cut through in the mix. I was wondering if anyone had this cab with the Beyma upgrade and how would they describe the tone. The bass that I use is a 55-02 with Barts.
