BFM Quotes

I'm just re-evaluating everything in the signal chain. Everything. Also, been reading old BFM posts.
I have had this idea for a while to start a thread on quotes from Bill Fitzmaurice. He's no longer here, but his words still are.

Here's one.

"I'd use a mid with any 15, or even any 12 for that matter.
No matter how good the mids may sound directly in front of the cab no 12 or 15 can produce decent mids off-axis.
You probably don't notice it, since you likely stand directly in front of your cab most of the time.
The audience doesn't have that ability. "

(So now, I' re-evaluating my 115 project. )

Anyway, if you have a favorite BFM quote, let's see it.
 
BFM: "That leaves an octave wide hole in between where the woofer leaves off and the tweeter starts.
All twelves should be paired with midrange drivers, not just tweeters.
In most cases a midrange renders the tweeter unnecessary.
Commercial cabs use tweeters instead of midranges because that's the cheap way to do it.
When you DIY you can do it the right way."
 
RE: difference between Eminence Basslite S2010 and Deltalite S25010.

BFM: Power handling. Since both have virtually the same sensitivity, xmax and xlim they also have virtually the same broadband output capability, but the 2510 will accept more power without burning up the voice coil. The 2510 also has a few more dBs sensitivity in the upper midrange.
 
BFM: This is the best way to brace a cab. You can use dowels as shown or 3/4 x 3/4 inch stock, even 3/4" plywood strips. Rib bracing is relatively ineffective by comparison.

With a removable back add spines across the back opening, cross brace those to the baffle, screw the back to the splines.
 
the 12s Barefaced use now are less beamy by design. The direct correlation between diameter and beaming for single speakers only applies if the cone is fully rigid, which it isn't.

This isn't a "new" thing, changing the cone geometry to improve it's off-axis response in the upper register has almost been done since the birth of the loudspeaker.
There are several ways to improve it but each one has it's own cons 'n pros....
 
One thing that has been done "right" on these Barefaced drivers is attaching the dustcap directly onto the voice-coil former (this is not something new).
This is especially helpful if you want to design a fulrange driver that doesn't need a tweeter.
The cone of these drivers is also curved and not conic, this helps the mid/high response (also nothing new).
I've owned a 12" driver from the early 70's with these two design "tricks", it came out of an organ (it had very nice midrange response and it ran up to 10khz without whizzer cone, the voice-coil was only 1" though ).
Don't get me wrong, from what I've seen so far these Barefaced drivers should be damn good.

I've mentioned many times that the awful mid response of most Eminence drivers is because of the large dustcap (I've modified a few drivers myself). For MI speakers this may be a good feature and causes a "wanted" breakup to add some color, but not always.

Most speakers have oversized dustcaps to make people think that the voice coil is larger than it actually is. If they attached the dustcap to the voice coil, then speaker sales would plummet.
