Big City Gigging!

hi,

I'm moving up to the city(Sydney,AU) this month to study.
Due to a number of reasons ( security, portability etc) i won't be taking my SWR rig up there.
My question is: Has anybody on TB working in the big cities of the world ever used a D.I/Preamp Purely as amplification and run direct into the P.A?

I don't have any lined up yet but i played the Annandale and the Spectrum last year. I'm from the gong so haven't done much in Sydney as of yet. But i hope to get a few gigs up there shortly! and by hope i mean, won't eat if i don't.

Yeah, i have an Ampeg combo i might drag along once i replace the speaker...And yeah, i don't like monitor sound either...but it would be lovely just to bring a bass and a sansamp! . I've only played straight through a P.A once when my amp blew a fuse and i didn't have spares. I learnt my lesson.

I only use a pre-amp Di to the PA and it sounds amazing We have a Bose PA with two sub woofers so no amp works great for me. I roll in with my two basses and my gig bag with my pedal and I am good to go. I too was a Ampeg SVT 2x 8x10 kind of guy in my youth but I have learn my lesson and if you don't think two Bose sub Woofers can shake the place you are sadly mistaken LOL RTS

You can probably buy something cheap up there as a backup.

I've been on the road many times and only taken a sansamp SABDDI. Isn't optimal but it is perfectly doable. You will completely dependent on house monitors, which are usually pretty crappy when it comes to bass response. You can still hear yourself well enough to make sure you are playing the right note (usually), but get rid of any notion that you are going to sound anywhere near "good" on stage.

While it's CERTAINLY each to their own, IME even quality BOSE subs don't give me NEAR enough mids as necessary, while they will no doubt supply enough ass end to 'shake the place' clarity & mids I've found lacking sorely. Just IME/O

I only run direct. My band uses wired in-ears on stage. My rig was a bass and a Pod X3 Live, but I've since added an Eden Navigator to get better tone. The X3 Live sits in front of it as a multi-effects pedal.

It really comes down to how you are ok with hearing yourself. Whenever my band plays festivals where we're not doing the PA support, I bring my Markbass CMD102 (a 300W 2x10 combo). I don't trust most sound guys to give me anything like a decent bass level in the monitors, so I put the combo at a front corner of the stage firing back at the band, or sometimes as a sidefill. I don't like having to do that though, I'd rather just use the in-ears and be able to load in really easily.

Best three bass sounds I've heard were taken direct, and the bass rig - if any - could not be heard in the house (to any significant degree).
