Oh, this should be fun.....

considering what the 210 does---it really doesn't feel that big.

just a little bit taller than most 410's but a few inches shallower. Also in line with 15 cabs.

I'll be banging on one to make sure everything is cool---a few changes to the xover but I think we've got it.

Can you say "understatement"? I think y'all need some medical disclosures/warnings re pacemakers and other vulnerable folks. I will wait to hear one in my region. Got the 4x8 and still digging it. Amazing output for the nominal speaker size. The 2x10 LF is no doubt gonna amaze

Good grief - what are us poor chaps supposed to do? 4x5, 8x5, 4x6, 2x6, 4x8, now 1 and 2x10, plus many others - there are too many options ... choices ... aaarrrgghh!

This has been an interesting story to watch though, I'm learning a lot through all of your (Mike) endeavors and one day just might be able to justify the investment. I'm more practical than a technical purist so how your designs work in the real world is very intriguing to me.

Keep 'em coming, I'll be watching...

Well, keep reading here and learning! If/when you get to the point where you are ready to invest, give Mike a call. I'm sure he'd help you arrive at a decision.

I dig your avatar!

Thanks Spiritbass! I have family in the Midwest so should a road trip ever take me through Chi-Town again I will definitely try to make a stop and check out the various designs. Ownership would mean that I would definitely earn my 'star' in the "mediocre bassists with boutique equipment" club. :D

Re: the Stooges - another famous trio (like RUSH) unparalleled in their genre. I love 'em.

So, I have a semi-serious/tongue-in-cheek question: what's the best Big-E cab for metal?

To preface this question, I'm trying to work out a trade with a local shop to get a Trace AH350SMX. I recently sold my 800rb/Henry 8x8 rig, but I may try to work another deal to get the 8x8 back as it is a great cab (and I went to the trouble of rewiring it with 12 ga. to each driver, and the owner wants a 210 anyway).

When I demoed the TE in the shop, I noticed that it has a HUGE amount of additional lows as compared to the 800rb (making it perfectly suited for the SWR Henry) as the 15" cabs at this shop were begging for mercy when I tried out the Trace head. Sure, I could drop the 32hz slider a bit, but how would this translate into a Big-E?

Mike sent me a price list some time back and included some of his thoughts regarding what would work for me. He indicated that a 4x8, for all practical purposes, kills an 810 fridge volume-wise (in addition to all the other benefits of the design) but from the buzz surrounding the 210 it might also serve my needs.

For the near future I may go with the Henry anyway - it's local to me and more affordable - but for sake of discussion, education, relief of boredom and GAS, any input remotely relative would be welcome.

Thanks,

Eric

The 48 and 210 are similar as far as volume. I'd say either would compare to a Fridge as far as volume but with MUCH more low end. The 8" line is kindof on hold right now. They require a large outlay for minimum purchase and I feel that the 210 is better.(although I still feel that the 48 is killin')

Now this isn't a comparison of quality of sound (note to mods) but a MAS210 will go MUCH louder and lower than an 8x8. And it's much smaller and lighter.

Much better for metal than a 48 due to the ability to easily change the cabinet voicing and the dual mids.(stronger mids)

As the 8 x 8 is no longer available and SWR is on its way out I think I can make comparisons.

A 2x10 as loud as a 8x10?

8x8, in reference to my SWR Henry cab (or rather, the one I had).

Mike, thanks for the response. I'm looking forward to seeing spec's when they are published; from what I've already gathered here on TB a Big-E would be a nice match for that Trace head - and for my needs I really don't need a ton of low-end extension, but having it available would be nice.

How would that 210 handle some distortion? When running my MXR M80 I would turn of that piezo thing in the Henry; it was too harsh otherwise. Through a tweeter-less cab it sounded great.

I like the way the mid drivers angle up slightly; at 6' 5" I didn't get much direct sound to my ears.

Thanks again,

Raz

Here's how I figure

an 810 usually uses a speaker with a Vd (amount of air moved) of around 150 cc's

That means that the amount of air moved by the entire cabinet is about 1200 cc's

The woofer used in the Flex cabs has a VD of 300 cc's (twice that of a conventional 10" bass speaker)

When you figure that you're getting at least twice as much per driver (due to the contribution of the rear wave) with the 210Flex you're getting 1200 cc's (it's actually more than that--(I'm being very conservative)

The Big E's handle distortion and effects very well. One player was deciding between a Big E and a very respected 212 cab. The Big E cinched the deal after he tried distortion and effects through it.

With the Flex series the mids that I'm using can give a very nice subtle breakup with some switch positions. That's why I went with dedicated paper mids--that's the type of mids I like.

My goals with the Flex series were these

1. Very flat and hifi (like Anthony Jackson)
2. Can stand alone as a world class PA cab
3. Can get a warm thick R&B sound
4. Can get as aggressive of a rock tone as one would like

I think that we've achieved them
