Biggest a cab can get?

Was looking at 15" cabs, then saw some 18" cabs. Made me think, why not 22"? Why not Marty McFly's rig? What's the biggest single speaker you have ever seen? Is it realistic tone wise to play something super huge?

Not really practical to go bigger than an 18. It takes a lot of power to get huge drivers like that moving, and they're not very efficient.

But JBL I believe did make a 30" woofer for a time. Bob Heil designed an enclosure for one back in the 60's, but it was never available commercially. There was a story about him in EQ magazine about 6 years ago, and they touched on it.

Personally I've seen a 21". 18Sound IIRC.

As people are quick to point out, aside from the visual POV, the physical size of a speaker alone is pretty meaningless.

IMHO/IME, anything bigger than 15" is a waste of space nowadays.
Unless You get 'em cheap .

i think for scientific purposes some companies made a few 36" or something like that. but thats for studying sound waves, not for thumping on the bass..

18" really is huge. stack two together and you'll wish you hadn't.

For speaker size the Accugroove Whappo Grande is 21".

That said size doesn't matter, 10's & 12's in a well-designed enclosure can compete or better a larger speaker in low end extension.

Electro voice made a 30" speaker according to the information available on charts with the TL-606 plans.

The EV's 30" cone was made of formed styrofoam if I recall correctly. I remember seeing one at a SpeakerLab store in Seattle back in the 70's and thinking it was "AWESOME"!

It's been awhile but if memory serves me, they were used for theaters promoting "Sensurround Sound Systems" to add realism to movies like Earthquake etc.

Not sure how practical they'd be for a bass rig as the boxes int. volume was equivalent to that of a moderately sized house. AND your amp would certainly have to an 11 on the master volume control!

the 30" rickenbacker cabs look like this:

I've got 3. They're sweet.

And yea, they're EV30W's - 50watts each.

Zeppelin used them for their first US tours.

The largest cab enclosure I've seen was a 20x12 made by orange. If I remember correctly, it was half a ton and the guy that was selling it wanted 25,000 dollars for it. Good luck with that. Here it is.
