Biggest/Loudest combo-is it out there?

I admit I'm selling the head, but it did serve me well for about a year. Still, the beauty of this setup is that you can also use any head you want (dependent on rack spaces). The removeable casters on the bottom also make it even easier to transport.

I would put a Markbass SD1200 in there... lighter and still loud as heck, and most likely a very good match for the 15/6!:bassist:

Yeah, I'm thinking I might wanna go with an LDS, or fEarful cab(not sure of the speaker config.). I just feel like I'm fartin in the wind, cause I want it all. I want a decent sized combo with great tonal abilities(Nice EQ), enough low end to use as a monitor for live/practice, and enough wattage to be heard. I guess I just wanna picture myself coming into one of our gigs with the combo in hand(or rolling on it's casters), and my basses on my back, and that's it(kind of like the stories I hear bout the (NY)city bassists). At the moment I do play a 4 string, but am looking for a 5'er, so I guess I have to add the fact that the combo should be able to handle a lowB. I don't know if it's really out there, but that's why I come to you all with your wealth of knowledge. Thank you all.

The LDS/fEarful 15/6.5 cabs usually use Eminence Kappa Lite 3015LF and 18 Sound 6ND410 6.5" drivers. The 3015LF can certainly handle a B-string. And did I mention these drivers are both very efficient? And light? ;) I also find the speakers to be very receptive to EQ adjustments. Find the right head to go with it, and I'm sure you'd be happy.

Now because of the ideas behind these designs, do they require a larger amount of wattage to be able to produce such low end out of a smaller cab/combo?

I don't know how the technical experts would answer this question, but I've found the tone to be good at lower volumes as well. Of course, the speakers can handle more power, so they also sound good at higher volumes.

It may be worth researching and/or asking questions in the fEarful and LDS threads to get more feedback.

As long as there's a handle on top...

I've read here that 500 watts is a good starting place.

Mike

+1... same with most large cabs. The difficulty with getting that wattage into the 15/6 is the impedance... 8ohms.

The 15/6 is actually relatively high SPL, so it sounds fine at moderate volumes with the typical 300 watts or so that a mono-block solid state micro/small head puts out (Markbass F1/F500, Aguilar AG500, Eden WT550, TC RH450, etc., etc.). However, these cabs can take and use a bit more power, so a higher powered head that puts out a couple hundred more watts at 8ohms (Markbass SD800/1200, Shuttle 9, Eden WT800 bridged, TecAmp Puma1000 bridged, etc., etc.) really opens them up.

Peavey BAM210. 350W with the built in 2x10s. Modeling amp with tons of tonal possibilities. Built in tuner. Built in compressor. Built in effects. Control it all with the footswitch board.

Add a 4ohm extension cab to get 500W.

I have a BAM210 with a Peavey Pro410 ext cab and it makes the thunder.

They don't need more power, but unlike other single 15s they can handle it and will continue to get louder with it-so if you want one as a substitute for larger or multiple cabs it only makes sense if you are pushing lots of electrons. With an M9 my LDS 15-6 is almost as loud as my prev Epi 310-210 stack, and weighs about as much as the 310 alone:p

I've been looking for exactly the same thing, and by far the best combination of watts, speakers, weight, and price I've found is GK's MB212 combo.

The problem is that up to now they were all but non-existant, but as of today Musicians Friend has them in stock:

I just got mine and haven't had a chance to gig it yet, but the tone is beautiful and based on non-scientific noodling in the den it seems to be stupid loud.

If you can find them, the Carvin combos mentioned here are real jems. I owned a Cyclops with the 1000 watt Redline head in it. Not the easiest rig to load into a car, but once you have it on the casters it's OK, and it's certainly loud enough for anything except maybe "heavy metal shoulda brought a stack" music.

The BRX212 is killer. I would have bought one of those in a heartbeat but I still had the Cyclops at that time and by the time I decided I wanted one they were discontinued...that's the one thing that drives me crazy about Carvin...if they aren't selling truckloads of a product they drop it and then you can't find it anywhere on the planet.

That's a really great combo, and IME/IMHO, it's a nearly ideal mix of portability, gigability, and affordability. I talked with the GK folks at Summer NAMM, and it sounds like the big holdup has been getting a few of the key parts from Neutrik. Once these get in, they are prepped to start cranking them out.

Tom.
