Biking to the Gig - Can it be Done?

SUUUUUUURE you can.

One bass, 12 pounds with gig bag.

One Behringer Amp, 31 pounds

One 4x10 G-K cab, 93 pounds

One backup Hartke amp head, 12 pounds

One bag of cables, 10 pounds

One case with wireless rig for bass, 5 pounds

One soft case with pedal board, 15 pounds

This totals approximately 175 pounds and fills the back end of a Chevy Blazer. I'm SURE that I could build a trailer that would carry it all and pull it with a bike, and then it would be no problem to bike 15 miles to the last place I played - through city traffic and county roads - with no bike lanes - and then re-load the trailer and turn around late in the evening and bike back all 15 miles in the dark. SURE I could do that.

No doubt it can be done. I have bike trailer for my son which has a good rain cover to keep things dry and I'm sure I could fit a bass, small amp head (one of the new lightweight ones), and small cab. So the size and weight part works out OK.

Physically quite doable, even in hilly Seattle. As a practical matter, the city's biking infrastructure would make a huge difference in overall safety. Can you get to the gig in bike lanes and/or dedicated bike paths away from traffic?

If you have to ride along a major arterial without dedicated bike infrastructure, I think it would be quite dangerous.

Although OTOH rising gas prices may eventually force a large majority of the autos off the road and then you'd have free reign;).

(BTW the direction of future petroleum prices and potential effects is quite debatable and that's not my point. It was just a tongue-in-cheek remark not to be taken too seriously.)

You should read Tony Levin's book where he talks about he and Peter Gabriel deciding to bike to a gig in Europe (France maybe?). Funny story, wish I could remember it. In fact, his book (which I no longer own) is filled with very funny stories.
