A I can offer is that I karaoke'd "Piano Man" together with a colleague who is 14 years younger than I am. It was her request - I was learning the vocal melody as we were singing it

I played and sang lead on "We Didn't Start The Fire" when it was a new song. Fun song to play but learning all the words ad getting them out while playing was a challenge.
I agree. Vast catalogue, but which are the faster dance numbers that go over at gigs vs which are the SNL (sit & listen) ones? The inherent 'problem' with Billy Joel songs is that, overall, they are not 'party' records or dance grooves, although there are a few that qualify somewhat. His repertoire lends itself to cabaret-type showbiz, where the stories and emotions matter most, and perhaps most importantly, the audience is invested in listening to the words and getting into the stories. And where sad songs are okay. That's not a typical music gig for me. The music is quite theatrical and content-oriented. However, there's no doubt that rock is at the core of it.
He was never a rocker per se, never a jazz guy, never a crooner. 'Billy Joel' is self-contained genre unto itself for a single, idiosyncratic singer-songwriter. For me, more often than not, it was 'brilliant song, but what can you do to it besides listen?'
Valuable to know, thank you. I suspect that's largely because they hear ML far less often than OTGDY.Unscientific poll between My Life and Only The Good Die Young... just asked a group of people...
Unanimous decision was My Life was the one they’d wanna hear.
Did you also do "It's the End of the World as We Know It"? That'd be a set's worth of lyrics in 2 songs!
Yeah it tends to be a regional thing. He's for sure big in NY and here in South Florida aka the 6th borough...Italian Restaurant
Billy the kid
New York State of mind
Still rocken roll
All go over well. BTW I live in New York so your mileage on this song my vary.
I always thought 'The Stranger' would be fun to do.
Yeah, people didn't seem to know how to dance to it, rock out or belly rub, so they went to the bar.....We played these two songs in the last band I was in - You May Be Right would get people dancing. Matter of Trust, not so much.
Just The Way You Are is frequently requested at weddings and goes over great. Extremes, in my opinion, is an awful song. Now, I understand that "xxxx# can't be wrong" and all that. Still awful. When I saw him at Kaufmann Stadium in 2018, this was the one song I was disappointed not to see. The rest of the show was superb.
Perhaps I Go To Extremes would be worth considering as a tune to add if you want feet on the floor?
I also think Just the Way You Are would be a nice choice, but that is a different kind of dance (and may be better in a wedding setlist).
I take it you saw him wearing "The Stranger" album t-shirt recently?BJ is having another moment. When things get back you should have a couple. Hughie the main character of "The Boys" is a fan. I remember them using "Big Shot" and "Pressure."

Absolutely love the tune – saw him perform it live on The Nylon Curtain tour. But the lyrics are kind of heavy...sorta like Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." (1984) or The Police's "Every Breath You Take" (1983). Who listens to the words anyways?Allentown is my choice.
