I have to say I was never very fond of Billy's work until I heard him with the Winery Dogs. One of those 'hes obviously very good, but no thanks'. I've really enjoyed the stuff they're doing, especially as a longtime MP/Dream Theater fan, its cool to see how well Mike rocks a kit that wouldn't need a crew of Roadies to set up. I guess the same goes for all of them, they could all shred the lights out on a crazy metal album but instead they all kept it mellow. Three awesome musicians making awesome music, for sure.

I've watched a few live videos of them at YouTube and I'm impressed! A real band with real musicians playing real music. Can't beat it! Especially in 2013! I hope to see them live sometime. =)

In this age of "cherry picking" music one song at a time, I hadn't purchased an entire "album" (what the hell are we calling it these days anyway?) in about 10 years. When I heard "Elevate" (the first single) after hearing that Sheehan, Portnoy and Kotzen were this band, I had to dive in. Nearly every song reflects the virtuosity these guys have on their respective instruments without overdoing it to the point of tastelessness. The playing, song writing, hooks, harmonies and lead vocals (who knew Kotzen sang like this?) are just all there... awesome. I can't wait to see them live.

I bought the Winery Dogs CD "sight-unheard". I figured Kotzen, I liked him w/Vertu. Portnoy, saw him w/Petrucci on a G3 show, they both blew me away. Sheehan, liked him w/DLR, saw him on a B3 show in a small room, but he had that "stadium" tone. That made me laugh.
So I thought "how bad could it be?" Not at all, it turns out! I like it! Gonna load it into iTunes right now!

YMMV, of course...
