Birdsong Club Pt 2

Anyone slapping on their Birdsong?

I'm tempted to make a serious effort to add that into my playing and I feel like I would need/want an active bass (Muckelroy most likely).

I'm just wondering if anyone is slapping on a Birdsong and liking the results? I figured either the Delano pickup or the Corto variation with just the bridge humbucker might get a decent sound.

I have a shortbass gt with just the lace sensor humbucker in the bridge position and use it mostly for slapping. It does sound better with my le bass preamp but the tone is pretty good on its own. I probably would prefer a bit beefier pickup (mm style) but I'm starting to dig the distinctive sound it has. Playability is pretty effortless, slapwise, compared to other basses I've had. Hope that helps.

Yeah I've thought about the short bass as well. Price wise it's probably the better bet for me. I'm keeping an eye on the used market too for any Mucks that might work.

I'm sure if I asked Scott to wire and set it up for slap he would probably do something.

There's also the SD Curlee which has a pickup in the sweet spot for slap, but I'm not sure that would be really geared towards that style of playing.

Does anyone here in the Birdsong club have a PB-One they'd want to trade for a C Bass? I know - I could post my C Bass in the classifieds as well, but thought I'd ask here first.

I have a Fusion, which I absolutely love, and I've had my eye out for a PB One for some time. I was actually talking to Scott about ordering one about this time last year... then 2020 happened, I hesitated, and now I don't know when he'll be doing custom orders again.

Instead, I jumped on a C Bass from the classifieds here a bit ago. Surprisingly, I'm not completely gelling with it yet. I've also read (probably in this thread somewhere) that the C Bass really shines in a full band mix, and sounds kind of underwhelming on its own. I haven't had a chance yet for a full-band, full-volume test with this thing. So if the answer is "give the C Bass some time!", I'm open to that suggestion as well.

That pickup is tough, you really can't run it full out. I began to like it after I got the hang of it, but when I first got a C-Bass I was also underwhelmed by it.
I ended up swapping one out for a couple different pickups, and ended up settling on a Aguilar AG-4P.
That said..I MUCH prefer my PB-1, that thing is a total monster. Do it, you won't regret it. I have a 2 pickup one on order now, probably won't get started until later this year.

Interesting to hear your experiences with the Cbass, as mine are the exact opposite.

I had a couple of Birdsongs before, the Corto 2 and Fusion, and when I got the Cbass it was exactly what I was looking for. Bands I played with who had heard the previous basses loved the Cbass in the mix as well.

I've never played the PB bass though. Almost went for one but opted for the current five string build since the five opens up a few more options than a second four.

It's a model called the Power Bass, based on the classic Gibson EB bass line. It uses the DiMarzio pick up that fits the Gibson basses. A little more clarity than the Gibson "mudbucker".

PB-1 is the DiMarzio in the neck position.

PB-3 is the neck and a humbucker in the bridge, like the Gibson EB-3

Thanks for the advice. I do think I'll keep the C Bass around for a while, and see if I warm up to it. I'm sure I'm just being antsy, since I haven't been able to put it in a full band mix yet. Soon! Hopefully!

Out of curiosity: My Fusion is from 2010, and has the serial etched/woodburned into the back of the head. The C Bass has it written in marker on the back - 121010. Does that translate as a date? As in, that C Bass is also from 2010? Not a big thing, just curious.

If there are ever any PB-Ones out there looking for a new home, please let me know!

In case anyone's curious, or anybody else ever runs across the same thing, I did finally ask Scott, and of course he got back to me right away. What a guy.

"Serial numbers - the first batch of Cbasses had dates like what is on the Shortbass. First 2 digits are year completed, remaining numbers are the day it was either ordered or started or numbered for inventory purposes. Given a usual build time of a few months at least, I'd say that was serialized October 10 ("10-10" 2011) and completed in 2012. That would be one of the very first of the Cbasses."

So that's pretty neat.
