I could have gone with Alan for a shorter scale but decided to try a different flavor. The Harlot is sublime and the long upper horn solves any reach issues.

Alan does make exceedingly good basses, shorter scales especially (most of my ACGs are 31.5", but I have a 30.5" and a 26.5" 6 string). I've ALWAYS had a thing for Scott's work too though, I love the Fusion design especially!

The latest from my 5 string build. I just wanna say: if you gave me the wood, whatever I made would be a Partridge Family bus-like disaster. When I talked with Scott, I mentioned a few things... but nothing in my head prepares me for what he has here! The man is literally an artist.

I just got my first Birdsong. A Cortobass with two Lace humbuckers. How does one join the club? Also, what are the best flatwounds for a Birdsong?

One other question, Birdsong recommends using long scale flats on their site. Is that what all do?
That question varies.
1.) Scott recommends long-scale strings for round-wounds when thru-body stringing.
2.) Scott used to use short scale strings for FLATS ONLY when top-loading (Scott didn't like thru-loading flats).
3.) I thru-load long-scale flats personally and have since 2007 without issue.
4.) I don't know if #2 still is true for Scott. We haven't talked about it in a long time. He may have changed his stance - he's always thru-loaded flats for me at my request on multiple basses over the last 14 years.
On the Quick FAQ page on Birdsong's site ( [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] ) they recommend d'Addario ECB82 strings which are medium gauge, 50-105, long scale. They don't mention if they should be strung thru body, but from what you say that's what should be done since they are long scale. So, is there anything I should be careful of when doing this? I would think that the possible issue is the string kinking where it bends when going thru the body. Not sure what one would do to minimize chances of that though.
It's my preference and I don't have to cut as much off the end when I string-thru. Scott at Birdsong doesn't like the wraps on the flats going over the bridge at that sharp angle, but I've broken two strings in 35 years, and only one with strung-through flats and I was beating the hell out of it.

Yes, it's mahogany. I bought the bass used, but it was purchased/ordered from a shop (not directly from Birdsong) and the buyer had moved on to something else when it came in. It was sold as used (on Reverb) but on Ebay it was listed as "new open box" It sure looks new to me.

Yeah - Call Scott if you get a chance. If he doesn't answer, leave a voicemail with a callback number. He doesn't check caller id and he doesn't text. Even after 15 years, it's "hey man, it's Andrew - my number is XXX-XXX-XXXX. Give me a call back about XYZ."
But I'm sure he can answer any questions you'll have. If not, he'll make something up.
