In case anyone was wondering, I took the plunge and got a set of GHS Balanced Nickels for the Hy5, the B string does fit. The wrapping clears the nut by about 1/4". Sounds great on there, too!
I adore this bass. I just got it on a strap for the first time, though, and it's a little disconcerting. It balances really well, but the unusual strap button placement on the side of the upper horn seems to tilt the instrument forward. It makes it harder to see the fingerboard and just feels strange. I like what it does for my right-hand alignment, but not so sure about not seeing my LH fingers. Does anyone have any insight regarding why this design is used? I'll gig it for a week or two as-is, but I'm already thinking about moving the button to the more typical "Fender" spot on the tip of the upper horn. Is this Birdsong heresy?
