I received the fretless Mesquito #004 on Tuesday afternoon and am well pleased. I am playing it through a Euphonic-Audio system with all EQ set flat so the sound is hi-fi, true and uncolored. When I slide up and vibrato in the upper registers on the D & G strings it generates a sound like a cross between bowed musical saw and a contralto human voice. Its almost a haunting sound. The same voice can be heard in the lower registers but not quite as defined. I love the way it sounds and it is so easy to play. When I get a chance I'll try to record and upload a sample. I played it at two gatherings this weekend and everyone recognized and commented on the quality of workmanship. I also appreciate that Scott and Jamie don't just close a deal, they open a relationship.

I would love to get one of my hands on these basses... I live in Shreveport, Louisiana does anyone know of someone in my area that owns one of these fantastic looking and sounding basses?

I will be in Dallas on the 24-26th of April so if anyone in the area has one that wouldn't mind letting me get my paws on it that would be awesome! In the meantime I guess I will just lust away!

Ben- Sorry to hear about the troubles.... are you getting rid of ALL of the birdsongs? that just would not seem right...

There's no pictures of this one up on Scott and Jamie's site. And it's hard to photograph but these photos ought to give you an idea of this one.

I found an incredible ebony board that Scott worked for me. The top of this bass is all ebony... 3/4"+ thick and all from the same board. Scott and Jamie nicknamed it "Ebony Eyes". The back is blackwashed mahogany.

Scott did an incredible job on what was a very difficult build... ask Andrew - he's seen the routing tool that was destroyed by the ebony.

Do I qualify for membership even if it may be fleeting?

Couple more pics. It's really hard to photograph this bass. The ebony has a "rich-ness" that doesn't come through -- although I'm sure a professional would have no problem. :smug:

Check out the ebony truss rod cover. Typical fine detail from the Birdsong crew.

That was one of my favorites! How does it sound, as it's an unusual pickup/wood combo for a Birdsong?

Wow - I'd love to get ahold of either of those suckers. I always dug the look of that custom - the shape made a slightly modified return in my friend Levi's two (stolen) mesquite Birdsong guitars, albeit without the varitone on the upper bout.

Whoever gets those is going to score huge.
