I just got in a little bit ago from a wonderful weekend spent out in Wimberley with Scott and Jamie. I had the time of my life, and Jamie mentioned there being a Birdsong thread on TalkBass so I figured I'd check it out. Looks like you all have been busy bassers posting all kinds of gorgeous photos. I'll post a couple shots on here as well, but my photography skills are quite poor. No camera can do these instruments justice, though, so I guess it's alright. ;-) I'm the proud owner of Cortofusion #5, 8F-005, and in a year or so I will be welcoming home a Hy5. 'Fusion 5, the Panda Bass, is very much so my main instrument and I love it with all my heart. It's got a walnut body with two ebony stringers, ebony pickup cover and faceplate, walnut arrowhead truss rod cover, cherry/ebony thumbrest, cherry nut, and some beautiful woodburning in various places on the neck. Scott and Jamie, who are indeed very busy gnomes, asked me to send their love and thanks, of which I am certain they have an infinite supply. They are some of the absolute best people I know, and it is an honor to have spent my time with them. My thanks and love to them and all of you for supporting such a truly wonderful family of folks, of which you all are certainly a part.

P.S. That's me looking goofy as usual in that youtube video that Scott put on the Birdsong News page. Truly an honor. Also, I live in Atlanta, Georgia and would love to meet up with any and all Birdsongers in the area. How bout it, Ben? :-)

a.) Paul, welcome to the club. Those of us who have been to visit the shop know what you're talking about. Wonderful people. I take it you saw the 12-string guitar in the works (walnut and ziricote)? That's for my band's lead singer/rhythm guitarist, who traveled with me to the '07 "Birdsong Gathering."

b.) Another Fusion owner - one of the best decisions I have ever made in terms of gear or in terms of making things better for me when making music was saying 'yes' when Scott said "how would you like me to make YOU the Cortofusion prototype?" That bass is gorgeous. Welcome to the family.

w00t. #30! I'm proud to be a member. I did indeed see Levi's XL 12-string, and it looks fantastic. Everything I saw did, of course, look fantastic, but that guitar definitely stood out.

No doubt. I love my Corto (8C-117, if you just joined us...) more every time I pick it up. Scott & Jamie's basses are such beautiful works of art just looking at em... Then, you hear em! I think people who have never heard one just do not understand...

Every Birdsong on this thread is beautiful. Congrats to all of you (and me... lol). Beautiful stuff...

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if any of you are larger players. I'm 6' tall and am considering going to a short scale due to back and hand issues. I was wondering what the larger players experiences were with comfort/fit with the different Birdsongs. Any input would be helpful.

I'm in Dallas, so I'll probably take a trip down to Wimberly to try them out when I get some time.

My wife own a Sadhana, beautiful bass, great sound. I love the feel of the neck, Soft V.
I'm 6'1 and I'm not comfortable with short scale. I've played long and extra long scale for almost 25 years now.
Ben is 6'1 or 6'2 and he is very comfortable with the shortscale basses.

If possible try one before you buy. That's your best beth.

If there is one thing I've learned, height and comfort level with a particular scale length is only mildly related. Stanley Clarke is huge plays short scale. A guy I know from the local bar we play is 5'4" and prefers long scale.

The thing about Birdsongs regarding your particular health concerns is the balance. I think that "well balanced" will make more difference than shorter scale. BUT - trying it out is key.

I gambled from across the country and got lucky.

6 ft 2 here... Long arms, huge hands... All my basses are shorties, and I love em. Love the Cortobass the most though...

Thanks for the responses.

My main concern is with the smaller body size and that these seem to have been designed with smaller players in mind. I have played around with a few short scales and found the scale to be OK, although I haven't played one for any length of time.

Anyone check out the Birdsong site?

Some interesting changes- all 2009 Hy5s will go to 17mm string spacing using a standard hipshot bridge. Looks like it was just taking too much time to create a custom bridge for every bass. I wonder what that does to the playability on the neck. Also only "double string through" on the low B. I guess people that got the first batch of Hy5s have "limited editions" now!

I suspect the 17mm will make it easier for a lot of people. The 15mm was really tight. I could have gotten used to it with little trouble - but the key is that it would have taken getting used to.

I'm bummed about the double string through change, but I know better than to second guess Scott at this point. Well...okay, maybe not.

Will the Cortabass get some really deep lows ? Deeper than what's on the web site ? I have a Kubicki and it really can get some deep lows and that's what I'm looking for. Found a used Cortabass for 1200 and was thinking of buying it.
Note: the Cortabass has two pickups with the Lace pickup at the neck.

It depends on the pickups that are on it. It also depends on the sound of your computer speakers and how they reproduce the sounds on the website. It won't sound like a long scale, but it will sound great.

Try it.

I had an accident. Involved 8C-117 and a mic stand. Not devastating physically, but mentally. A small dent/scuff on the lower horn. HAs taken me days to come to grips with it enough to post. I hope the tears do not short out the keyboard.

Man, I gotta tell you my Corto has massive lows... It has the Lace Gold Sensor and Lace Humbucker... It'll rattle your teeth in a good way. Beautifully fat sound... nicer lows than many 34"ers I have heard. All about quality, not necessarily scale.

With the neck pickup, you'll have no loss of lows. With that bridge pickup, you'll have less lows than the "Hot Lace humbucker" that they offer, but you'll also have two pickups that actually blend and balance well (whereas the hot lace would totally blow the single coil away in terms of dominance in the tone).

It's a great combination of pickups and if you love the bass but find the bridge pickup not to your liking, you can contact Scott and inquire about replacing it with something a bit more feisty.

I love it. It's another example of the kind of mindset I love so much about Scott. And to believe Scott ragged on me about wanting skull knobs back in '06.

6F-001P (Fusion Prototype) - slight scratch on lower edge, slight scratch on butt edge, faceplant into cargo-furniture coffee table left three large dents in the E-string edge of the fingerboard that I see everytime I play, but that makes no difference in playing at all. I'm only just now, a year later, over the fingerboard damage to start playing the Fusion out again as anything other than backup.

7C-077x Fretless - scratch just to the neck side of the forearm contour, tiny almost invisible scratch in the headstock where it curls by the nut on the E-string side, couple of light scratches on the back that are invisible in most lighting.

Bobby...they're ALL mentally devastating. :hmm:
