Curious:

Anyone with both a Corto and a Sadhana... I have not played the Sadhana. How does it feel compared to the Corto? I know the neck and pups are the same, and I play standing up most of the time, so my playing while sitting won't be an issue... How do they compare?

I have both a corto and a sadhana, though my corto is a "basic" so it's just the "slab" body without the additional contours in the wood.

They of course feel similar because the necks are the same spec (curiously, my necks are a little different in style - probably from different "runs", but still the same size)... The sadhana body is not as wide (as in, when you're looking at the front of the instrument) so it's somewhat smaller. Also, the sadhana upper horn attaches to the neck sooner than the corto... Doesn't make much difference unless you're the type that likes to wrap your whole hand around the neck to play chords really high up... You can do that a couple of frets more with the cortobass design.

Other than that, the differences are just what you see, different shape ("swoopier" look to the sadhana). They both balance extremely well standing or sitting (as you know). Most other basses want to slip, slide, neck dive, and otherwise launch themselves from my lap unless I hold them firmly by a strap and my fretting hand. The Birdsongs pretty much stay put on my lap just resting lightly against my body...

Thanks a heap, Crayon... I guess I am most concerned about the feel in the hands with string spacing, etc... I think that the body differences won't come through in the playing so much... JUst trying to plan my next Birdsong... If I am looking for something used, I would probably jump on either...

Well, after playing my beautiful Cortobass (serial # 9C-173) for three months now, I am having a problem with keeping the E string in tune. Scott suggested trying a new set of strings, but the Curt Mangan strings are not easy to get up here in Canada. So I thought I would ask everyone here in Birdsong land what strings do you use or suggest? I like the nickel roundwounds and I like the gauge Scott used (45-105).

Scott used to use SIT purebass (I think I got the name right). I've also used D'Addario's and Ernie Balls on my fusion and been happy each time.

Scott says "no steel strings" because for some reason, he was having problems with wolf tones coming out when he tried them way back in the day. I think I remember him saying something about DRs not being high on his list, but he didn't sound too heated up about it.

I still have the CMs on my Cortobass that Scott installed. I'm from the James Jamerson school of bass -- I hate changing strings and leave them on until they literally fall off by themselves.

I am not a fan of Roundwounds at all but the CMs on the Cortobass sound really nice. And they feel OK too. I had never used them before and was surprised that I liked them.

But I bet a set of flatwounds would sound really nice on the Corto (despite what some says to the contrary).

I use Chromes (flatwounds) on my Corto, Mesquito and Hy5. I have had the Mesquito for over a year with the same set of strings and it just keeps sounding better and better. It stays in relative tune even after an outdoor gig; meaning the strings are in tune with each other even though the temperature/humidity environment has changed dramatically from outdoors to my basement practice room. I play mostly country, blues and old R&B so flats are where it's at!

Jade, is the E string going flat like it is stretching? You could just have a bad string.

I love the Curt Mangans... I love the Corto so much the way it sounds I am not inclined to try anything else... JAde, have you tried getting the CMs online? that is where I get mine... I don't think I saw them at GC or any of the other local stores...

I had trouble with the E string on a set of SIT Silencers (like 1/2-rounds.) SIT sent me a new string ... but same problem. Don't know what it was.

I haven't put the Chromes back on; I'm stuck on Elixirs for now. Very smooth feel, good sound to me though maybe a little bright. Not quite as much tension as the Mangans but not noticeably soft like Fenders, DRs, or some others. I'll use these until they get hairy, which should be another month or so ... then I've got a set of the new coated Ernie Ball strings waiting in the wings.

Hi Jade,

My bass should be finished in the next month or so. If you can wait, I can ask Scott to ship a set of Curt Mangan strings with my bass and I can figure out a way to get them to you somehow (I'm in Toronto). It might even be easier and faster to ask Scott to mail you a set ... you could pay using Paypal.

When my bass arrives I'm probably going to try R.Cocco and Ken Smith strings for fun. Both make warm high quality strings. You should be able to get these from the 12th fret or Clubbass in Toronto. Again, if you want to got that route PM or email me and I'll try to help you out.

Take care and good luck,
deb

On my Fusion I use D'Addario EXL165's Reg Light Top / Med Bottom, which are the same gauge as the Curt Mangan strings that Scott recommends for Cortos. They're nickel wound, inexpensive, and effective.

At first, the E string was going sharp and so was the A string so I stretched them (as per Scott's instructions). Now the E string goes flat so maybe I have a bad string.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions!

I like the CMS for their sound and feel. I have Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings on my Fender Jaguar and I don't like them. I find the tension is extremely high and they seem to be very rough (they hurt my fingers after a few minutes of playing). My ESP B50 LTD has SIT Nickel roundwounds on it and I really like their feel and tension so if I can't get the CMS online I may put SIT's on the Corto.

BTW, has anyone tried DR Strings on their Birdsongs? If so, has anyone tried their Nickel Roundwounds (I can't think of the name of them)? They could be another option (I can get them from Juststrings.com).

Thanks again everyone for the help I really appreciate it!

Jade, I've used DRs Nickel rounds (DR Sunbeams) but not on my Cortobass. They feel really nice and sound great. They are just about the only roundwound strings I will use if I have a choice. I am not a roundwound fan and I will absolutely not use steel strings under any circumstances. I just don't like the way steel feels and sounds on a bass.

The Sunbeams will probably sound really good on the Corto.

DR has the Sunbeams, as Dean mentioned, and also nickel Low Riders, which I think have a little more tension.

The Cortobass soundclips on the following page were recorded with the nickel Low Riders:

Thanks Mitch those clips sounded awesome!

It looks like I can order strings directly from Curt Mangan Inc. so I'm going to do that and I think I am going to try some DR Sunbeams and maybe some Nickel Low-riders as well.

I have a D-Tuner on both of my Birdsongs and to me it does not effect the balance at all. Scott shipped me my fretless with a standard tuner as he did not have any drop-D tuners in stock then he shipped me the tuner when it was in and I after I put it on I did not notice any differences in balance.

Is it hard to put on?

With the drop-D tuner, did you have to put a heavier gauge E string on your basses for example they are shipped with a 105 E string so did you have to go up to a 110 E string?
