black & blond P makeover (etc)

It's like a Christmas tree!
Love it!
Wow Bob Wow! - a back-to-back from BassHappy and Basshappi! :hyper: Thanks for dropping by! After doing the 1st one, I knew exactly what it took so the rest went smoothly. Some light rubber gloves helped.

Did someone say Christmas tree?

And I just got 'the call' for a Friday night jam session with long-time jam-mates, aka; "the Core 4" and it'll be the first chance to play/hear this Glam P/J in a group setting.

Congrats JIO - really wonderful and crazy idea that really works!

I assume that was none other than you in the infamous Bobby Vega photo?

Any word on how the Bond Girl thing is working out?

Yep, me and Bobby McGee! ;) Bond Girl is doing great! We're rehearsing new material including a Cherie original called "The Darkest Day". (a faux JB song) Gigs are coming up in April, May & June.

The nights jam session was great! Good energy and open ears all around. (and some good laughs!) The Glam P/J sounded awesome! It was really fun to play - nice & light, good balance and it has a super fluid neck. Tone-wise it sounded really good - the others noticed and commented on it. (and that's saying a lot!) It really inspired me to play creatively when appropriate and solid throughout. It has a really nuanced presence both with and w/o a pick. I never needed to play too loud - at any volume I always could be a part of the mix. It definitely has got something going on.

Man, that is so great to hear JiIO!

Glad that baby is working out so well for you! I love the overall look and inventiveness!

Yah - it's the gold. I really like the gold hue of brass, but gold plating is a bit on the garish side - why I usually avoid it. It works on this bass - sort of a trashy-disco-glam appeal. Which reminds me.., where are my platforms...

As this thread is sparkling lately - I'd like to give a heads up to anyone interested that Stew-Mac has a "blow-out" sale today of sparkle finish P's and J bodies in gold and silver. ($168.51 w/shipping/handling) I got a silver sparkle ash-bodied P - for that price it will get used eventually. Time to get your Roxy Music records out!

MAN!

If they were rear rout with no unsightly cavities on the front I would buy one of each J and P instantly!

Incredible deal for sure!

You know my personality flaws, I could never cover up that incredible sparkle with a pick guard. Not in my DNA.

Personality traits yah, if not for the oversized neck pu rout and exposed wiring channel on the J, I would have snatched one of those also. I guess I'm just more critical of J's than P's in that regard - at least the P has a 'standard' pu route and it's made of ash. That was enough for me to order one at that price. I'm hoping my trust in Stew-Mac's general quality will assure it's worth it once it arrives. (bonus if it's relatively light!) Plus, the body has not been drilled for P-bass pg screws, so a custom-shaped pg could be an option. I've always like the Italian luthier Mann 'quotation-mark' pg shape which could work on this body.

Options for the silver sparkle P body. I love the look of these dark J necks which would look awesome against my Stew-Mac silver glitter body. I can choose gold frets, and I have the other set of mixed silver/gold Fender 70's RI tuners all ready to install, which will really stand out against the dark wood. The Stratosphere neck is really tempting - but for 2 issues stemming from the same source. The extension/ledge is pretty deep on the body (a couple inches) so 1) adjusting the butt-end tr port will be, let's just say... a bit difficult on the bass, and 2) as the 24th fret is so deep into the body, access of the standard lower cutaway will make reaching 'down there' tricky. (sort of like on a standard 20 fret T-bird...) Also, the top two are new, and the reversed hs one is 'lightly used' so I figured it was someone who spent some considerable money having it made by Warmoth, tried using it and realized it wasn't worth the trouble involved. Plus I have the tuners needed (for a standard hs) and the lefty ones on the reversed hs are my least favorite so I'd end up replacing them anyway.

Warmoth (in stock-so at a reduced price from custom ordered) wenge/ebony/dots (gold frets/brass nut)

Warmoth (same as above) wenge/ebony/blocks (gold frets/brass nut) I think if I can get this exact neck (with the brown streaks) I will order it.

and from the Stratosphere - the most exotic : Warmoth wenge/rw/reversed hs/24 fret (extention) w/tuners, nut & string tree

Ordered the wedge/ebony (w/brown streaks), blocks & gold frets J neck. (what you see is what you get) I have the tuners & (chrome) string tree, have a nut for it, have a bridge (chrome - for now) and the rest down the road. Or just maybe this neck will end up on my roasted J body w/trans-blond finish… we'll see how the sparkle body looks. (and weighs) It's funny because I usually wouldn't do blocks, but the white pearl against all that chocolatey dark wood just looks so nice.

So now I'm seeing the big silvery white blocks against that beautiful rich dark wood and hearing the word "dark" - I'm envisioning a big chrome-framed Darkstar pu instead of a Delano oval. And a custom pg of some sort, but maybe not the 'comma/quotation mark' shape.

So I'm starting to see a pattern emerge with this P/J (P-body/J-neck) and that is leading me to envision a dub-monster. The beautiful rich dark African neck wood will also probably be dark in tone - darker than maple. And the Darkstar pu will be massive sounding - perfect for 'maintaining low-tones'. I'm thinking passive to avoid a battery, and would string it with black tape-wounds. Maybe a Tonestyler tone pot for the big tonal range it offers but otherwise V/T only. I found a site that does laminate wood pg's and liked this example. It's a multi-lam wood which is good for stability and he nitro's/polishes it (or not if you choose) when it's done. Maybe natural (with some oil when I get it) would look best ($10 less w/o finish) to be more like the no-finish-neccessary wedge/ebony. The broad visual difference between the artificial glitter body/gold and chrome hw, and bright pearl blocks against the dark organic woods should create quite a dynamic look - and will match it's hopefully dynamic sound. :bassist:

Yeah Mon

I am with you - lots of nice colors shaping up for this build - reach into the darkness baby and sparkle away...And of course any pick guard featuring wood has instantly grabbed my attention....

Care to share the source on that?

I sent an inquiry earlier but haven't heard back yet. No prices are listed on the site, other than the part about $10 less for no finish.
