Double Bass Blast cult

A four-year-plus build time for a plywood bass seems excessive, his family and staffing issues aside.

Tom Link had one assistant last I heard, and he cranks them out MUCH faster.
Who's waited 4 years... I'm on 2, the longest I've heard of is a few months before that. I'm not truly sticking up for the guy. But I've talked to people that know him personally and they said he wouldn't pull shadeie poopie.

And as a reiteration I personally haven't tried to get my money back beacause I've wanted a bass built by him since I first got into upright bass. So I stilll have hope as this is my dream bass. So yeah lol.

So giving up and getting the money back is a dream killed. In fact when I met djordje, Geoff firebaugh, mark Robertson, and jimbo Wallace all talked to them about was there blast cults and if I should get one lol

Hey man, if you really want a bass from Jason, you have the scratch and you’re fine with the situation, go for it. Don’t listen to the schmos telling you what’s a real bass. Mine plays great after a set up, sounds decent acoustically and amplifies great. There are plenty of unpainted basses that don’t sound or play as well. Several pros love theirs. I really hope you get one and live it.

That's what I'm trying to do lol. A lot of the comments that are being made are out of ignorance from what I gather. He uses better materials than a ccb. And they are designed for rockabilly. And the pros that do play them are killer upright bass players.

Plus the next step up from an"plywood" bass is a carved bass. And those cost a mint if they are made from good wood

Or a well made hybrid bass! Upton sells their basic variety for 3K, and the custom built ones for around the cost of a Blast cult.

Honestly, I see the appeal of the blast cult electronic systems, neatly built into the tailpiece and with very loud bands in mind. Maybe someone can start making a similar product to sell to luithers and manufactorors.

Ignorance? I’m not one to drop names, but the next time you see Geoff, ask what his plan is for the next time the neck breaks on the Bandito because it was made from a bad piece of wood. The last time it happened the thing was damn near done in the middle of a tour. He was lucky to make the gig.

And Geoff has a high profile so he got a good one.

It’s your money and all, but jeez. Take a clue.

If you play Rockabilly, you want a plywood anyway. Ask Jack Hanlon at Upton's what he plays.

i've been watching this thread for awhile and i've kept trying not to comment but geez. it blows my mind how people continue to try to be positive and not just totally dog these crooks that rip off so many people. it seems to me that its our duty to warn the rest of the community about these criminals and stop continuing to give these losers the benefit of the doubt just because you don't want to give up hope that you've already gotten screwed. this guys has done this TWICE!! Two different companies?!?! and i will tell you, i have a friend that bought a King, the Slap King, and i was NOT impressed. especially for the price, but even at half the price, i would not be impressed. i would suggest to everyone that reads this thread, if you lost money, sorry, cut your losses and look elsewhere. if not, and you are looking for a bass, i'd suggest the Upton ply. i had one, sold it, but it was a nice bass. Most rockabilly players i've met play cheap Englehardts with cheaper pickup systems and they all sound just as good as any King or Blast Cult i've heard, for alot cheaper. King/Blast Cult is all about marketing an image, and obviously doesn't care who he screws.

There’s a company in Europe called Duke double bass, and they make a decent painted bass they deliver reliabley. When in was in a rockabilly band in Sweden my bandleader would go on and on about them.

That brings me to something else. As weird as this may seems to a jazz cat, some bandleaders in the rock genere really want a look and and image for their band. I could tell that this particular band leader was a little disappointed by the dark brown Thomman I had at the time. If you’re a serious ‘billy player looking for the best gigs I understand the appeal of a custom painted bass, as well as pickups and setups optimized for that style.

Here’s one thing to think about though. Rockabilly is really tied to hot rodding culture. The car guys choose an antique platform to have a vintage looking, but customized and supercharged ride they put together piece by piece. A lot of rockabilly bass guys do the same. Maybe the resources would best be spent on a nicely set up ply as a “platform” and save 2k for customization, just like a guy who buys an old barn kept Dodge or Oldsmobile that needs paint, and sound system, and a modern engine. The blast cult is more like a kit car, IMHO.

I can say that the Upton guys are willing to do just about any reasonable mod to a bass they build. I seem to remember reading one review where they beefed up the customers bass so it could be stood on. The one thing they couldn't/wouldn't do was the dealbreaker for me otherwise I'd own one right now. If they ever change that policy, I will order one.

I wanted a Blast Cult for a long time and almost pulled the trigger but I just never did. From the sounds of it in this thread, I wouldn't even buy a T shirt from them now. I feel bad for what seems to be a decent guy going through some hard times but that doesn't give him the excuse to run off with peoples money.

Welll I just got word that mines about done. All that's left is glue fingerboard, tuning machines, then to the paint booth.

But you still don`t have it in your mitts! I do hope it is a happy ending and that the company can repair their reputation and that it is a genuine delay and not a "story" to delay any legal action. I would just love to be able to play well enough to warrant looking for a custom instrument - till then I will dream..............

Just out of curiosity, what will upton caatagorically not do?

Glad to hear it's coming around for you. Hopefully you get it soon and it's all you wanted.

They wont make a blonde bass. I understand the reason had to do with one they made had a blemish and they had to start from scratch because the customer wasn't happy. It's cool, and I understand why they wont. They almost sold me on a.....dirty blonde/amber sort of finish but my heart is set on a blonde bass. I know if I got the other, I'd still want a blonde...might be shallow but at 4 grand, I want what I want and I respect them even more for saying no rather than chancing my not being happy with it.

Still have the quote though....Amber-ish finish, flatback, Eb neck, antiqued tuners, Poplar veneers, and fatty unwound gut strings....very sexy.
