One of the movie channels aired Blazing Saddles this week. While I'm surprised a media company in our politically correct world we live in today chose to run it and risk the complaints, e-mails, letters, social media backlash and whatever else, I happily set my dvr, viewed it for the 800th time today... and loved every stinkin' minute of it. What a classic. The writing and the casting are fabulous. So well done!

Unfortunately, it's often difficult to watch as a rerun on TV, because they nearly always censor the best lines.

Back in the days when you could actually make points with humor. It gets censored because of racial language, yet the entire point of the movie was how stupid/wrong/backwards racism is.
The "old" world was just as politically correct as today's. It didn't adress the same issues but rules, no-nos and givens were just as important.
I've got Blazing Saddles on dvd...in a box set including Silent Movie, The Producers, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety and Robin Hood.
Some really great comedy work...can't imagine any of them getting a green light these days.
Today's morality censors would have a heart attack!
I'd definitely love to read his memoir...looking at his wiki page, the guy certainly has had a full life, not least including surviving WWII's Battle of the Bulge, a happy marriage to Anne Bancroft...and writing the Get Smart series.

When they came back to the scene with them going through the toll gate one at a time...I came totally unglued! Wide open desert, no walls, they could have gone around the toll gate but there they were going through one at a time! I laughed for days over that scene!
I thought his memoir was already out, but it looks like its not going to be released until November 30th.
I just checked the Mel Brooks Wiki and found out he was a writer for the TV series "Get Smart".

I often wonder how a young person would react to this movie if they saw it for the first time, would they get that its poking fun at racism and hypocracey and not the other way around given the world they have grown up in.
Buck Henry (early SNL guest) also had a big part in the writing of get smart

I'm black, and IMO this brilliant movie not only points out how "stupid/wrong/backwards racism is," but also the fact that racism was so pervasive and open. The characters spew racial epithets as casually as one might say "Good morning." For instance:
"Horses?! We cain't afford ta lose no horses, you dummy!! Send over a coupla n*****s."
Out of context, this would be a horrible thing to say. In the context of this movie, it's hilarious!
I won't say there are no black folks offended by Blazing Saddles, but I've never met one.

I think the same could be said if one of my favorite comedies, "Airplane" was made today.
To @FilterFunk's point, Richard Pryor (a co-writer of Blazing Saddles) won a Grammy award that same year (1974) for an album with the n-word in its title.
