And if only about 5 ten inch drivers can beat a 15", much less an 18", then I'd say that driver size is VERY important.

It comes down to driver design. There's not many 5" drivers out there designed to go low. It's possible - massive, massive xmax and other T/s tweaking. But you lose a ton of efficiency. There's always a trade off involved.
And, that's just looking at the speaker. The enclosure is just as (or, arguably, more) important. Just take a listen to a 2x10 ported versus 2x10 sealed for instance.

Edit: Also, when that phrase ("speaker size doesn't matter"), it's plainly obvious that Talkbass members are talking about common bass cab speaker sizes - 10", 12", 15" and 18".
 
That's the rig I was talking about. But a single 5" speaker would get blown to bits using real power, when compared to a single 15".

No single mid bass driver of any size can take 900 or 1500W - which is the power rating of the head the OP is blowing speakers with (bridged). It's a moot point in this case. More drivers or a smaller amp is what he needs.

I agree with every word. Especially about cabinet design.

Forcing a smaller driver to inefficiently drive down where a larger speaker can do it easily is a massive waste of time, energy and money.

Also, keep in mind while you limited your argument to 1:1, often times that's not what is used. Even a 2x10 can easily go lower than a ton of 1x15 and 1x18 cabs, and do so efficiently. There's not even that many 1x10 cabs out on the market.

I know it doesn't matter to you, but power handling and frequency response (just to pick a couple of parameters) are not identical. If you don't identify exactly WHICH drivers you are referring to, comparisons based on size alone represent a slender hope of grasping an illusive certainty, IMHO.

In other words, you can find any number of examples to support your view, but they all ignore the basic fact that there are plenty of good smaller bass drivers that kill plenty of crappy big bass drivers. Discuss.

I'd take a crappy 15" over a crappy 8" any day of the week, because if I have to use the speaker without FOH support, at least I've got a chance to have enough volume.

The 8" would tear itself apart.

That depends a lot on the 15" speakers. I have a couple Celest 15" guitar speakers around the garage that can't handle the "bass" from a skinny string with more than 30 watts each.

That is not a fact that can be stated. You can't paint with such a universal brush.

Which is the point - just because it's a 15" driver, does not mean that driver and enclosure is designed to "go low". There are 2x10s that will *still* go lower than 2 1x15 cabs. Take for instance the Acme Low B2 cab. That is tuned incredibly low. It'll go lower than say, 2 Ampeg PF-115s.

And I've seen 5" drivers that couldn't handle an AM radio.

There are crappy drivers made everyday. But, all things being equal, a larger driver can always go lower with more volume. It's based entirely on the ability to move air.

Get a 10" speaker with great excursion, and a 15" with e same excursion, and the 15" will go lower every single time.

So? If I had to pick one up to go to this theoretical gig with zero FOH, I'll take the Acme, not the Ampeg. Lower, louder, lighter, more power handling.

The only thing the diameter of the speaker tells you, is the diameter of the speaker. Everything else is up to T/S parameters.
