Blew my 12".....AGAIN!!!!!

You need to learn how to use WinISD Pro and end the guessing. As for the speaker suggestions, expect to get almost as many as there are posters.
LOL....you are soooo right brother. It's just that I initially thought a car sub driver that normally handles only huge lows would be a good option. It appears I'm wrong. I admit openly, I am not as informed as those that know audio engineering . ideally I'm hoping I can be pointed in the right direction, and will be able to use my existing cab, but have a driver that won't blow....I hope. if I do get the ability to use my existing cab, it seems likely the cost of the new driver will be substantial. ( but not as much vs keeping replacing the wrong speaker)

Remember a car sub sounds nice deep and loud in the extremely tiny confines of a car's interior. Put a sub outside the car and its not going to sound nearly as good.

(my car came with a factory powered subwoofer - a single 6" speaker as a sub under the passenger seat! And it does a surprisingly ok job at normal volumes - but its no match for a pair of 12's in a car. But a pair of 12's in a car box is no match for a 2x12 bass cabinet.)

You don't want to move the Henry - I understand, its not light (though if you have a hatch/wagon you just tip it over and it slides right in the car. Put a blanket over your bumper and load in/out is easy. Get a bandmate to help carry it up any steps or on to elevated stage).

A single 12"... you need a sub box with the right speaker. Don't think the Avatar is going to cut it for what you are asking - especially as you have blown 5 speakers trying. You could possibly find a 12" sub box - look at PA subs and check their specs. Maybe try one out at a store to see if it gives you the volume you want.

Maybe try the 12" as a low-mids cabinet. Set the crossover higher and add a hpf then add a powered sub to that. The 12" cab will give you the punch and the sub will cause the shaking, while your 4x8 takes care of the mids and highs.

I have no desire to go full range, or displace my Ampeg. Love the sound of the 4x8 already. As stated, I'm not looking to move much more than I'm moving now. Just need a driver that will not blow, sound good and hopefully work in my existing cab

Then I would replace your 12 with the cheapest driver you can, then douse the whole rig with gasoline at your next gig, and wait for the fire works.

You want too much, from too little, of the wrong gear for the job.

Again....definitely not going from 2 cabs to three ( plus rig is not set for that low of a resistance)

Appreciate the Input though...thx

If the crossover is not adjustable you're doing it the hard way. Because, and I'll admit I'm guessing but your cab probably starts rolling off at somewhere near 100 Hz and drops off to near nothing by 50-60 or so. This means you're just wasting it- it's not doing anything in its sweet spot, where it can produce real volume (above 100 Hz. ). For real volume at really low frequencies you'll need bigger speakers/cabs or more of them.

Could a decent part of it be that the avatar 12 is near your feet and no where near your ears?

I personally would find a nice 15". They can be surprisingly small. Something like an EV TL cabinet isn't a sub but has plenty of what you need in the low end of a bass guitar. Another option would be a 2x10 or 2x12. It isn't the size of the cone but the amount of air moved (2x10 is about the same as a single 15).

Thank you....investigating now!!
regarding the fearfull 12 sub......In looking at said cabinet.. It appears the design is strikingly similar to the Avatar, and I may actually do well with the 3012LF-4. It'll handle 1100W peaks, and is a Bass ( not Midbass) driver.

I suspect I may have found the solution as suggested earlier in the thread. Now to muster the 2 hundie said driver will require. Hope I don't blow this one as it will be the last time I'll try and do this with a 12.

Thanks everyone.

Well, no, it's really both. If you turn it way way down it won't blow, right? But you can't do that so you turn it up and poof. It's just not meant for the job.
I get it. So am I just never going to get a 12 to produce frequencies between say 47hz to 100hz at decent volume? I'm just fooling myself? Hope that's not the case. Bitter pill to swallow n' all.

If a 12 isn't gonna do the job ( and it always did....till it blew that is) Then yes, I suppose I would swap the 12 for a 15. But then I get into the " what's a portable 15" cab that will act as a good low range cab in a BiAmp rig?

ooh boy....

The crossover's lowest setting is to split frequencies at 100Hz. And yea, I'm sure your right that the avatar loses volume below 100, but because I have separate volume control for the avatar, I can set it to where I just hear the low end It usually is at about the same level as the top though. No great boost required.

I'm not sure about your particular needs, but I think better cabs exist (fearful or similar). Your biggest problem, IMO, is the very low crossover point. That's a killer. If it was higher (like 200) we probably wouldn't be having this discussion. I can't imagine what Carvin was thinking with that.
