Blown away by the bass tone

Geddy Lee's Rickenbacker rock tone on Exit Stage Left. One of my favourite Rick rock tones ever recorded. I'm not sure what the backline was, maybe Ampeg.

^^^ This. I was already a fan of Rush, Geddy, and his tone before the album was released, but when I heard Exit Stage Left - that was when I decided to buy a Rickenbacker.

From what I have read, Geddy's gear at that time was: A pair of Ashly SC-40 preamps, using the Ric-o-sound stereo output to have each pickup go to a separate preamp, followed by power amps (I think Crown), and then speaker cabs. The Ashly that the bridge pickup was sent to, had an overdrive mod (diodes).

I've read that Pino played that bass track. When you listen, you can hear his melodic fretless style clearly.

Love Pino's smooth bass sound....makes me want to get a fretless but I know that's all him and something I doubt I could imitate.

Two guys for me

John Paul Jones on the first zeppelin album...largely the reason i was drawn towards bass.

Later on Phil Lesh's tone on Europe 72...To this day one of the best bass tones around IMO.

Bakithi Kumalo on all of the tunes on "Graceland", and John Patitucci's upright tone on "All Love" from the first Chick Corea Elektric Band album.

Rickenbacker basses sound absolutely incredible. As much as I want to try other instruments, they just don't sound as good, so I don't stray away for long.

Rex Brown's tone on pretty much all Pantera albums. It's so heavy it can crush everything.

For myself, the Ged tone from Farewell to Kings to Exit Stage Left. Other tones I love would be Doug Pinnick on Dogman, Eddie Jackson on Empire and I Mother Earth's bassist on Scenery and Fish cd.

More recently, the 'synthy' P bass tone of Charlie Puth's - Attention, which is not dissimilar to Dua Lipa's - Don't Start Now, is a tone I'd happily use widely!

I've seen the band Live a few times in person and am always blown away by Patrick Dahlheimer's playing and tone. Him and Chad Gracey lay down a really nice but also layered groove for the other guys in the band to work with.
