Blown Speaker - How Do You Know

My Aguilar GS112 sounds slightly distorted or fuzzy and I can never get a crisp sound out of it. Im using an Eden WT400 head. When I run the Eden through my SWR Goliath it sounds nice and clear. I suspect I've got a (partially?) blown speaker or one that's on the way out. Is there a sure fire testing method?

Pull the grill and push on the speaker. If it grinds, crunches, or has any kind of resistance - you've got a blown coil. Another way a speaker can blow is by creasing the cone. Take a look around the edge of the speaker for folds, creases, or crinkles. Those would tend to make it more farty, whereas a blown coil will be nasty distortion.

I'm real hard on speakers so I know this stuff all too well.

Thanks. I've blown a few too. I've already checked the obvoius symptoms and nothing seems apparent. Something just doesn't sound right with the speaker.

put your four fingers on the cone,evenly spaced around the dust cap and push down evenly. if your voice coils burnt,it will feel (or sound) like its rubbing (it is!). put a battery on the speaker wires and "tap" one terminal to make the speaker go in and out. If its burnt sometimes it dosen't move smoothly. Of course,if you apply battery power and it dosen't move...RIP.
