Blows me away every time I pick it up.

The Elijah Craig is the Barrel Proof - it is a pretty good bourbon.

The Barrel Proof Elijah Craig is very good, but that bottle in the photo is the no age statement rubbish that replaced the very nice EC 12.

Since when did Makers Mark become so elite? I understand the appeal of bourbon, having grown up in KY bourbon country, and my family knew the Samuels pretty well. But back in the 70’s, the Makers Mark distillery just produced good bourbon, nothing magical. I think advertising is mostly responsible for its desirability...oh and the plastic dipped cap. IMO, its all about image. The Samuels were able to use that to their great advantage.

Maker's Mark was elite when it was first released many decades ago, but over the last 30 years it has been eclipsed by far better bourbons. I wouldn't label Maker's Mark as anything special.

I can never pass up an opportunity to brag on my 6.8 lb. G&L. It is really amazing to pick up a bass that light.

The last bottle of barrel proof I picked up still had the 12 year age statement. It was definitely a recent bottling. Maybe you're thinking about the 94 proof small batch. Glad the op likes his Carl Thompson as well.
