Blues music.

Zombie thread, but... sure Clapton has a passion for the blues, but he hasn't done anything good with it since... oh... Cream's cover of Crossroads. Everything has been tired re-hashes, same old licks. Crossroads was huge in terms of blues guitar playing, really great innovative approach. I think he's been boring ever since. Derek & The Dominoes are a great group, only more for the Dominoes and less for Derek. People like to bow to Clapton, but I think they forget that he was no longer 'God' since Hendrix jammed Killing Floor at that Cream gig. Music isn't about competition, but it is about being real and challenging yourself.

Some people may say that all blues guitarists play the same old licks, but they do it differently each time, unlike Clapton. I'd rather hear Hound Dog Taylor play the same riff all day than anything Clapton has done. His album for Robert Johnson? Oh man... It's horrible.

So... yeah :)

Gotta love that Sirius radio! 24 hour a day blues coming in from outer space! Everything from the way back scratchy stuff to the latest artists, and the rockers doing the blues program for super revved up stuff.

Our Portland, Or public library has a fantastic blues selection.

I feel that he got the gig with Cream because, oddly for a lead player, he acted as a restraint for Bruce & Baker.

A big +1 for the earlier mention of Willie Dixon. In the Blues Bible, Robert Johnson wrote the Old Testament, but Willie wrote the New.

I respect other's difference in opinion, no big deal there if you don't like him, but "Hey Joe" is hardly a blues song. Listen to his song "Red House" off of his CD Blues. It's got some fantastic blues guitar work IMO.

Not being a big Hendrix fan, would you say that Jimi Hendrix's blues repertoire is limited to that one album. "Blues".

I'm not passing Judgment on anyones taste. I'm just trying to understand how he is considered one of the best blues guitarist/artist.

You don't have to be a Hendrix fan to learn from his mastery of the blues. Voodoo Child, Hey Joe, Red House, Hear My Train A Comin', are just a few examples of his blues chops. Great players like Stevie Ray, Santana, Eric Clapton consider him to be one of the best. Even Miles loved his playing on Machine Gun.

I think his fame as a blues player rests more in his approach to blues and how he incorporated it and fused it into rock. He basically played "acid blues" and brought blues to the mainstream after it had fallen out of favor and 60's pop was dominating. His soloing was very much inspired by past and contemporary blues players which he incorporated into rock. His style certainly isn't for everyone, so no hate coming from me at all :) but I think he is very important in the blues world. The most? Maybe not, but very important nonetheless IMO.
