Zombie thread, but... sure Clapton has a passion for the blues, but he hasn't done anything good with it since... oh... Cream's cover of Crossroads. Everything has been tired re-hashes, same old licks. Crossroads was huge in terms of blues guitar playing, really great innovative approach. I think he's been boring ever since. Derek & The Dominoes are a great group, only more for the Dominoes and less for Derek. People like to bow to Clapton, but I think they forget that he was no longer 'God' since Hendrix jammed Killing Floor at that Cream gig. Music isn't about competition, but it is about being real and challenging yourself.
Some people may say that all blues guitarists play the same old licks, but they do it differently each time, unlike Clapton. I'd rather hear Hound Dog Taylor play the same riff all day than anything Clapton has done. His album for Robert Johnson? Oh man... It's horrible.
