Body Build for the P-Yama

Curious how the rosewood would look with white. Hmm - I'm generally in the "Guitars should be black or sunburst" camp, but a white body with black pickups, black bridge and black control would be interesting.

I must agree on the black on white concept.

Black spray day! It did well, other than one 'alligator skin' in one edge. Odd, it's been maybe 5 days since the primer and I really do light coats. Maybe I got a bit heavy with the black in that spot, it is a bit harder to stay consistent on the curvy bits. Oh well, it's going to be wet for a few days this week. Plenty of time to sand that spot down and more black spray then next weekend.

Waffling now on the gloss finish. Thinking matte or satin. Got out my test piece. Knocked it back with 0000 steel wool. Then 'buffed' one side with piece of old T-shirt. Those two are shown. I wish I'd covered up part of the gloss for comparison. FYI - the white Scotchbrite pad I tested left more scratches than the steel wool or I should say, it left more visible scratches.

I'll spray it gloss as planned, then look at it for a week or so before making any decision. And, yes, I know the knocked back finish will 're-gloss' from the high contact areas over time.

Agreed. I sat and pawed it last night during TV time and it really grew on me.

Took out the old body to do some more matte testing.

1. - Gloss spray, right from the can, no posttreatment. (BTW - Not great but functional).
2. Rubbed down with 0000.
3. Rubbed down with 0000, then buffed by hand with an old T-shirt
4. Sanded with 2500 sandpaper, wet.

Second try on the black spray paint. Much better this time. I also tested some matte gloss spray on the headstock. I really like it. I'll matte spray the body in 4-5 days.

Matte clear coat today. Only two days after the black, but it's been 85 degrees in the sunroom and I left it there for maybe 10 hours each day. It looks OK, not perfect, but OK. At certain angles, I can see partial glue lines, ugh.

Did my light relic'ing. Just a tad of paint removal and some polishing to mimic normal play/handling. I really like the matte finish.

I'll add hardware in a couple of days.

Impatience got to me. All assembled. Set up is next. Small crack formed on the transition up from the pocket in the back when the neck was screwed down. It's just cosmetic. It tells me that transition may be a tad high.

Hangs wonderfully on the shoulder. Total weight = 8 lb 8 oz.
