Booked a show, better one came along same night now what?

One month out is pushing the "tight" timeline but not condemnable, IMHO. Also I don't know where ur from but here in KC, bands drop out from time to time. The owner goes to one or all of several pages dedicated to the KC scene and puts up a "I need a filler" ad and its generally jumped on and filled quickly.

Worse case scenario is you'll never play that club again if you truck with the right guy (or girl) on the wrong night. Don't let it be a girl.

I say go for it.

A situation like this causes such mixed emotions.... why people just run they're mouth talking smack is beyond me. I go on here for several reasons... to unwind is one of them. Simple participation can spark such disparaging comments. I'm sure someone will take this post here and turn it into some terrible act I just commited. Way to go TB.

Yep, they're looking at changing that one to the Friday night before... one days difference. Kinda cool... I'm a sign guy, this management company runs a resort and they're in the initial stages of setting up their schedule. Kinda cool. Trying to get all the gigs and please everyone.... almost going to pull it off.

what was the question? I read it as ''Is it common to pull this ( douche ) move?''. It's the same as saying "I'm considering pulling this ( douche ) move''. It's a stick.

This. It would be completely unprofessional to cancel a booked gig because a better one came up, and word gets around. The question shouldn't even arise.

Depends on your situation, really, can you afford to work for less when you could be working for more?
Demonstrating that you are in demand may also help negotiate better terms with the venue that's already booked.
I like your approach though to talk with the venue and see how things go.

Yep, really all was asking for by posting was opinions regarding bringing up the situation honestly to the first guy. Was just going to share my dilemma with him, let him know what he means to us and feel out the waters regarding a solution and like originally stated, if the conversation starts going south, reel it back in and still stick with the prior schedule.

Exactly. If we turn the situation around, how happy would anyone be if their band had been undersold last minute to another group for $200 less?

that is how to bring such a question to the table.

Imo you need a healthy personal relationship to go there. Otherwise you will come off too cheeky. I can't imagine how you could bring it up without the booker thinking you are all up yourself, booking his venue and then wanting a different date instead. All his venue means to you is a spare date filler.

Since you are well in with the rich venue I think you should give away the date moving idea and concentrate on being well in with the new cheaper venue.

Well, call me a d-bag, but I HAVE done this. One of my bands had two or three gigs booked at a venue over a number of months. It's a bar attached to a bowling alley and gets very slow in the summer. Several months ahead of time, we get asked to play a campground near the Loudon speedway on motorcycle weekend, which is a big deal around here, and falls on one of the nights we were booked at the bowling alley. BL has a long-standing relationship with the campground owner. I called the venue we had the booking with to talk about it, stressed that we would play the night if she wanted us to, but considering that it was months ahead of time would appreciate rescheduling or switching nights with another band and would arrange a sub band unless she preferred to arrange it herself. She said she totally understood and that she would make the arrangements. Maybe she was just being polite about it, but I got no vibes that it was an issue at all.

As it happened, the campground gig got canceled. Apparently the bikers who normally go there trashed the place last year and got the cops called on them; this year they didn't come back, and contrary to the owner's expectations, no others came in to replace them, so there was no one for us to play to. Should have just kept the bowling alley gig - 20/20 hindsight.
