Bootsy Collins, so many effects

To the OP, if you want some of the basic sounds there without sounding EXACTLY like bootsy, an envelop filter, a delay, and a fuzz/distortion will cover a lot of ground. You won't get that crazy pitch shifting stuff but those three effects will get you started. Do your own research but on a budget I recommend the EHX micro Q-tron for envelope, Ibanez DE7 for delay, and a Turbo rat or Little Big Muff for gain. Those effects are all under $100 and they are all pretty decent. That would be a good starting point for a pedal board in a lot of styles actually. If you really want to get into having a bunch of effects ASAP without spending several $100 (if not more) you'll have to settle for a multi.

Just a disclaimer, I'm not trying to tell you how to sound just like Bootsy. I'm just suggesting a way to start collecting some effects that will get you on your way to that style. The micro Q-tron will not sound like a Mu-tron but it is a cheap envelope filter that's decent.

I own a killer sounding vintage Mutron III and my back up is an early '80's Ibanez Autofilter which does a very good job of emulating a Musitronics Mutron III. The Ibanez doesn't get quite as rich and vowelly, but it's a very close approximation of it's big brother (which has a much more robust power supply).

Maxon makes these as well and they are not costly.



My rig can sound pretty funky - not Bootsy Funky, but funky nonetheless:

Based on your two posts in this thread, please stop looking for a flame war...if you haven't heard him lay it down for James Brown, P-Funk and solo stuff, simply ignore this and move on. Instead of suggesting that he's talentless, maybe you could simply state that you don't like effect-laden bass solos (in which case this might be the wrong forum to be checking out). I don't think one should insult someone else's playing unless they're willing to post a video link of their own playing. Are you willing to show us what true talent is? ;)

Or a delay with an internal effects loop.

The models that I can name off the top of my head are a Keeley modded DD-3, Diamond Memory Lane, Blackbox Quicksilver and the Moog Analog Delay. I'm sure theres more though. And I'm sure theres plently of rack gear that can do it.

If you wanna do this on the cheap, the yamaha magicstomp has a pitch shifter that sounds cool but has a really noticable lag. What is nice though is that this lag can be adjusted for up to 1000 ms and it has a feedback control. Around 80 bucks used.

I disagree. I play bass, i never solo but this is funky as F**k! Ive heard a lot of guitar solos that wouldnt come close to this! Ive seen him around 98 or so playing and it was one of the best gigs iv'e ever seen. Though i think my ears have been damaged since! ;)

I liked it. Not in a "I wanna play like that, I'm gonna cop those licks" way, but it seemed a good expression of Bootsy. And I appreciated that he would play legato and play with tones and effects and not just play a bunch of fast notes.

his best stuff post James Brown was really his slow stuff. Check out side two of "Ahh the name is Bootsy Baby" for some of his finest Hendrix-inspired mu-tron psychedelic solos. Probably the greatest post-do-wop makeout music ever recorded, too so take THAT Damone!

If ya gotta pick just one track, it's gotta be "Munchies for your Love".

I love haters! We dont get enough of them in chicago.

You guys wouldnt be playing thru effects if it wasnt for William Collins. Much less know what the %$#@ to do with them.

And being a King Records studio bassist at 15 isnt the easiest to do.

Haters...Feel the love babay! Feel it!
