So, before returning the unit, let me ask here.
Has anyone faced any issues with the GT-1000CORE, as below?

A few times already, I noticed that changing a single block in the effect chain, changes the overall tone in unexpected ways.
I have not used too many blocks enabled in a single patch, usually 2 or 3 mostly.
My first issue was I had a divider splitting the signal to a reverb and a delay. Then I moved the blocks out of the divider, leaving it empty, and the tone got really boomy, almost all high frequencies were gone. Moving the empty divider from dual back to single seemed to fix the issue.

Another issue I had was with a patch that had nothing but the compressor enabled (x-bass), again, just by enabling it, the tone lost all its clarity, even though the compressor settings were very very mild, not much compression going on.

Anyway, my overall experience so far is that the unit is very unreliable and unpredictable. Changing one effect block, might impact the tone in some unrelated way, and, at least once, I had issues with my sound clipping even though the gain was fine. Although this time it could very well have been the sound engineer.
But anyway, I’ve been using it live for a while, and it’s been a pita. I have been afraid now to do simple changes now, like enabling/disabling a delay block, as this can end up impacting the overall tone.

Has anybody faced something like that? I’m considering to return the unit, but I thought I’d ask here first, as the manual so far didnt provide any useful answer.

Cheers

*disclaimer: I have only had mine for about 3 weeks. I love it, and already have about 50 presets downloaded or created, but although I'm very comfy with it, I'm no expert.

I'll address the gain complaint you had first. I have a Spector with a Tonepump JR and EMGs, which is a very hot combo. I experienced quite a bit of weird clipping at first, but I found that by reducing the input to -15db I was able to get a perfectly smooth tone. If you have an active bass or are running pedals before the Core, this is the most likely fix.

I'm not sure what setups you are describing with the reverb/delay issue... Could you post a picture of your signal chain?

As for the compressor, I'm also curious where you have it in your chain. That may just be one of the pedals that you have to put in your fx loop though, because other than experimenting with all of the settings and other compressor modes in the CORE, it is what it is... Side note, the Zoom B2 Four has some excellent compressor models in it.

Howdy.

Regarding the gain, I use a pair of Seymour Duncans with an active pre-amp. Indeed the output is very hot, but I had it properly setup in the Gt1kCORE, Accordingly to the manual, but again, the clipping issue I had most likely was a (tfbad engineer :) not the first time I had problems with the same engineer, so I’d blame him on this.

Regarding the crap tone. I don’t know yet if that’s just my poor operation of the unit. But as I said, it does some unexpected stuff…

The compressor, it was the inly thing enabled on the chain, so in theory, the position should not matter, but it was right at the beginning. Nothing between it and the master out was enabled.

Regarding the divider, I cant take a pic now because the unit is in our studio. But just take a look at what the divider/mixer blocks do. It surprised me that an empty divider had shaged up the tone ;)
You can use HPF and LPF on these dividers, but nothing was active.
Where did you get patches from? Maybe I should download some and give it a try with already made ones.

I’ve had the GTCore since it came and I must be on 5000+ hours using the device, and that’s every day. And I’m still learning bits and pieces. Probably the most important thing to know is Gain Staging. It can dramatically affect the way the patch sounds, good or bad. Give it more time, and practice as though it’s an instrument. It is a quality piece of gear despite what you might hear from others.

Howdy.

Huh, that is weird that the divider would do that. I haven't had that issue and don't have a clue why that would happen.

I know what you mean about unexpected stuff... I've been trying to work out a "Royal Blood" style patch and it's been quite weird :sour:. I'm getting closer, but I still can't get it.

There's some patches on Boss tone exchange and also on Boss tone central. There aren't many nearly as many bass presets as guitar though. Eventually I'll upload mine. The presets vary in quality, and some are geared towards recording.

The only patches on there so far that utilise the V2 update are from Boss.

I've been working on a Royal Blood patch. I don't have a short scale bass so it doesn't exactly right, but I think I'm in the ballpark. The Overtone effect with the Harmonist +5 effect in parallel is really good guitar type sound.

Nice, I hadn't tried the harmonist for some reason! I'm using a sub n up mini (fx loop 1) in place of the harmonist/octaver, but these are the two layouts that I've gotten closest with so far:

(ctrl1 activates dual mode with lower loop)

I'll try the harmonist out!

Looks good. This is my interpretation. This is a FRFR, recording, 4CM patch. Can be adapted for an amp input.

DiV 1 - HPF 315hz, LPF 200hz
FX 1 - Overtone (similar to Sub n Up)
FX 2 - Harmonist +5
DS 1 - Fuzz Bass
AMP 1 - X Drive
EQ 1 - Graphical EQ
AMP 2 - Fat Tube
CMP - X Bass Comp
CHO - Mono Chorus
REV - Plate Reverb
SLR - 2x15
EQ 3 - Low 40hz, Low Shelf Boost, High Cut 3.15k
FX 3 - Hard Limiter

Hey,

I’m having some issues with my two effects loops on the GT-1000Core. I have been experimenting for some time with both loops and have hit some issues.
  • I’ve run it with the 4 cable method to try and incorporate the bass pre-amp and Core’s signal path and can’t seem to effect any change, regardless of whether the effects loop is turned on/off. When I tweak the eq of the pre-amp it does not affect the sound.
  • I’ve run a couple of pre-amp pedals, with the same as above. No change when I tweak bass/treble/middle of the eq. One of my pre’s is a Tone Hammer and the AGS does not change the tone at all.
  • Sometimes the loops seem out of order - they seem to pick up something in loop 1 when it’s plugged into loop 2, but this is unclear because as mentioned above, it’s not working well.
All of the above pedals have a big impact of if I put them AFTER the Core, but I the purpose of an effects loop is to place a preamp or other effects at different places in the signal chain.

I’ve already done a factory reset and still having the same problem. There is a authorised repairer listed on the Boss website not too far from where I live. I’m wondering if it needs to be repaired.

Has anyone else had these issues?

Hey, had a bit trouble with it at first. You could try sending to an authorised repairer for piece of mind. Here's a couple things to look at.

  • Hardware Setting - Send 1 and Send 2 set to SEND.
  • Send Return 1 and 2 set to NORMAL.

So, I think I figured out what I considered as a "weird behavior", at least on the divier/mixer blocks.

Essentially there are two operation modes for a divider, which are Single and Dual, i.e, either send the signal to a single path, or to both. When using the dual mode (i.e. sending the signal to both paths), the overall signal is considerably amplified at the end. So, enable 2 or all the 3 dividers in dual mode, and you get at least one order of magnitude signal amplification.
I have no way to prove it, as I didn't find any specification about it on Boss's manuals of what the heck the divider does specifically, but it seems it just copies the same signal to each path, and the mixer, at the other edge of the divider (in stereo mode), recombines both signals, essentially multiplying the signal strength by 2.

I still think one of those plays with routing, dulled my whole signal back in the day. I couldn't reproduce the muddy signal I had before, but, I also updated the firmware to the latest version, which might have fixed some bug. But anyway, boosting the signal just by enabling the divider is something I wasn't expecting. I used a HX Stomp before, and I didn't have this problem on the HX Stomp, maybe I just need to get used to it when using multiple dividers, and simply reducing the overall volume of the patch.

If two channels have amps in them, there is an increase in overall volume. I set the mixer channel settings to 50/50. As a matter of fact, I set all the Direct Mix settings in the effects blocks to 50.

No. I am talking about the pure fact of setting an empy divider to dual mode. I have no blocks enabled in the chain. Everything is disabled. Just ny getting am empty divider and set it to dual. It already increases the signal. Nothing there

Oh, I see what you're talking about now. When it's on dual it does add in a whole host of options, such as filters, which can change the tone a lot. If something got tweaked accidentally it could easily muddy the tone.

I just leave any unused dividers set as single to bypass those quirks, and if I'm switching from single to dual within a patch, I often have to cut the individual levels of paths A and B considerably. I'm assuming the volume increase is perfectly normal, albeit annoying.

Dual mode is essentially 2 signal paths at equal volumes, from memory the mix control in the middle setting is 100/100 meaning it’s both signals at 100% so yeah it’ll combine them.

It’s not a cross fade between the two channels. It’s more like the Dry where it blends in the dry incoming signal on top of the processed signal and boating the volume.

I found it a bit annoying for stuff where I’m blending two signals but it needs to work that way to use the LPF/HPF to do multiband stuff.
