Boss GT-1B discussion thread

I power my GT-1B with this unit:

ylIDsVA.jpg

Works like a charm.

Is it as good as the other devices described above? I guess that's up to _your_ ears and mind.

Found a GT-1B at a little local music ship .. used, for $100...

After trying it out in their store, with my limited knowledge on how it works... I decided to buy it and bring it home to spend more time with it, since they offered a 7 day money back guarantee.

Its got a lot of great stuff... its Graphic EQ is way better then my cheap $20 Behringer EQ Pedal... and its Flanger is much better then my TC Elec Thunderstorm flanger pedal...

However, when I downloaded the Tone Studio Software for it, and plugged it into the USB on my PC... all my PC Fans immediately started feedbacking through my Amp, creating a really annoying buzzy/fuzzy background noise.

Once I finish making changes to various settings through the software though, and unplug the USB cable, this noise immediately goes away!

So, I'm wondering... is this a common issue with the GT-1B when plugged into a computer?

Anyone happen to use the Sansamp preset within GT-1B OD range (BASS DRV) and also own an actual TECH21 SANSAMP, or are familiar with it?

I'm trying to make a judgement on whether to invest in a sansamp or not. The GT-1B setting has a usable quality, but a bit boomy.

Is the TECH21 SANSAMP or SansAmp bbdi way way better/more focused ?

Thanks

Greetings all.. I'm considering picking one of these up to replace some of my existing pedals...

But im debating between this and keeping my Ampeg BA110v2 Amp....

Or replaceing the Amp and pedals, with the Boss Katana 110... thinking about this option because the Ampeg just doesnt quite have the right tone... and i also like the sound of 10" speakers on combos. Tbe Katana might give me a better tone, plus all tbe effects.... but at 3 times the cost after adding in a footswitch...

Im leaning more towards the GT-1B and keeping my Ampeg, cause... i like Ampeg... even though the BA110v2 is a discontiued model and just doesnt quite have thst.... true Ampeg tone... its still a good amp for my small apsrtment.

I also have a Markbass Compressore that I'll be keeping as i really like its tube compression.
Classic Boss DD3 Delay? Yea got one... is it worth keeping compared to the delays with the GT-1B?

I also have the TC Elec Corona Chorus, Thunderstorm Flanger, and Dark Matter Distortion pedals.... which i might sell, except the Dark Matter, i like thst one too...

I also have the Behringer Bass Tuner and EQ pedals, ad well as their V-Tone Bass Driver DI pedal... each of which im also thinking about replacing with the GT-1B..

Im curious how tbe quality of the effects in this unit compare to those in the Katana.... and whether it can also give me tones similar to my DI... which gets me close to that classic Ampeg tone paired with the Markbass.

Lastly.... Im also using a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 Plus... which is currently axed out with all my current pedals.... even running the Markbass Comoressore off it via its rear AC outlet.

Can the GT-1B be powered off it as well? 4 AA batteries? That 6v? That wouldnt work on the 9v outputs on the pedal power 2 plus....would it?
I’m a bass noodler who only plays at home, and I also use a small Ampeg (BA108) with the GT-1B in front. I run my GT-1B output into the effects loop return to bypass the preamp section for better tone. My BA108 has been modded with some upgrades I learned about here on T-B so it already sounds more like a real Ampeg, and the GT-1B is a fun addition. YMMV.

I'm also interested in this.

Not sure. I'm consideraaAing a GT-1B but wondering if I should just go individual pedals.
Ah right

Ah right, I assumed that you already had a GT-1B!
Had mine 4 years or so. It's been great to have. Certainly good value and well built/designed. Some patches are better than others. I didn't intend it to be a replacement for (all) other pedals. So I've continued to explore/buy certain seperate pedals out of curiosity/desire more than necessity.

I feel these other pedals do a better individual job than the GT-1B. Perhaps it's trying to be too much in one unit? Weak areas for me are synth, octave, eq (low end clips out easily) , DI and extra distortion options control. So these I have individual pedals for these.

Most preamps, modulation, cab sims, wah, OD, reverb, delay are all usable.

I really wish BOSS/Roland would do a firmware update on the GT-1B, as it's a great unit to use.

Thanks. Sounds good enough for what I want.

I'm sure others know this - for the rest, here is a tip ...

I wanted to revive an old Ampeg SVT4 that the main input jack/board went out. The rest of the amp works fine. I didn't want to throw the SVT4 away or try to sell it for parts. A 40-lb. head is way too heavy to ship to anyone these days.

I created a few custom user presets, plugged the outputs from my GT-1B into both preamp-in channels on the back of the head, ran it into my SVT 410. I now have 1200 incredible watts of sound.

Sold my GT-1B yesterday. Bit sad to let it go. Had some great years with it, such a good design IMHO.
Just wasn't using so many presets and bought a couple of analogue pre amps which are awesome. Also have a C4 which is in a different league for synths, octaves, filters.

Oh well, happy days.

I sold my GT-1B a few months ago, replaced it with a Zoom B6. For me the GT-1B was a great effects unit (for home rehearsals) but it never quite cut it for me for use on live performances. The Zoom B6 however a different animal and I use it on all of my gigs. I don’t know whether I’ve got the settings just right yet on the fretless effect on the B6 however, as it was really good on the GT-1B and I do miss that.

Hello everyone!
I have read the whole thread, and must admit i didn't understand everything, but i have followed the advice of all of those who recommended to go through the computer in order to create our own patches.
I have a question though :
Recently someone posted here on TB asking how one could achieve the tone of Burniss Earl Travis on the following track with pedals:

And i wonder if the GT-1B could be used to achieve that?
And i also wonder about this track:

Is it doable and if so, how would i have to set up the effects chain? Does anyone know?

With the opening phase of the first track, he's definitely in octave / Boss OC2 territory. A lot of purists might maintain OC-2 is THE sound that can't be precisely replicated. But there are plenty of good octave pedals that get v close.
However, I wouldn't jump to GT-1B as first choice for that. Plenty going for it as a multi effects unit, but I found the octave options a bit glitchy and less well defined. I moved on to a Source Audio C4 for much better sounds in that area, plus many cool synth options.

There might be other filters added into the octave? Certainly later in the track sounds like it but it could just be from the synth/keys player.

I would hazard a guess there's a synth bass keys thing going on at the start - with the continual sustain & polyphonic simultaneous notes with the octave....

Not sure if he's just playing clean later on in the song.

Cool sounds on both tracks.

I know right? Love those sounds
The Source Audio C4 retails for between 260 and 300€ so this is no option for my currently unemployed self.
No idea how i can get at least "close" to that?
I noticed the octaver on the GT-1B does glitch in the lower notes but is okay from the 5th fret upwards, more or less.. so maybe with the right signal chain i could get closer.
I have created a number of cool octave patches but they don't sound close enough, hence me reaching out for help!
