Boss GT-1B discussion thread

Oversimplified response from an oversimplified setup guy, have you tried starting with the GT-1B and adding the rest one at a time ? I'm centering my response around the GT-1B, assuming that your claim is the GT-1B is causing problems... .

Start basic, maybe you can at least eliminate what the processor is OK with...

To me it sounds like you have a lot online but in reality I know it's not. I generally know how a particular bass and amp get along, go to a gig, hook them up and play, using the controls on my bass and amp that's it. Often at practice I'm set to where I sound pretty bad but everyone wants to hear exactly what I'm playing....

I just started looking at multi fx pedals to use for live gigs and stumbled on the GT-1B. Is it all its hyped up to be online?

The main things I’m looking for in a multi fx pedal would be effects (obviously), setting preset slots with effects and different eq and a down tuner.

Is that something the GT-1B can handle?

Yes, it can handle that..... It's what it is designed for.

I copy & paste my reply to another OP previously :

"The GT-1B is the only digital fx unit I've ever had. So I cannot compare it to HX Stomp, or any others.

I bought it as an affordable step into trying a range of possible synthy sounds. I still kept my analogue pedals - chorus, compressor, delay, reverb.

So far I've enjoyed how it performs and the control of tweaking sounds to suit. The Octave might not be the best and I prefer my Markbass Compressore. The bass synth effect is a bit erratic but I've learnt to 'tame it'.
I like, say, the combination of a hint of fuzz + Octave + chorus to give a mellow synthy vibe. I'm not after piercing (fake) synth lead type sounds.
With the expression pedal you can assign it to do all sorts, so could be blending in the amount of OD, or mod fx, etc over a clean bottom end. I do this live, so it's not all or nothing.
Of course there's controls on each effect for low/high tones, as well as eq.

For the money, I think it's a great little unit. Is it as good as helix stuff, I just don't know. Ignorance is bliss"

Some effects work better for me than others.
Amp/cab sims are worth exploring.
Tuner isn't much good IMHO.
Software takes bit of time....but v capable of combining effects. There are vids out there.

Does it have a detune effect? I play a few songs in drop B or drop C and it would be awesome to not have to tune for those.

Right now my signal is just bass>boss tuner> DG X Ultra> amp or pa. I just use the X Ultra as an EQ and distortion when needed. I’d like to have the extra effects.

I'm intrigued with your enquiry about a detune function. Not something I've really thought about and yes, could be useful to drop here and there, as I now play some deep dub stuff.

The Boss Gt-1B can offer drop tuning in a few ways:
Octave
Pitchshifter
Harmoniser
Pedal Bend

I just explored them with my own GT-1B. Some behave better than others. Plugged into my DAW and tested the tuning of the pitch drops and pretty spot on. I went down 5 semis ( a 5th) and low B still accurate.
The pitchshifter can sound a bit hollow and slightly 'wavering' on long notes. Some compression afterwards helps. (you can arrange the effects chain sequence on the Gt-1B)
The pedal bend though is surprisingly good and I will choose this.

Theres vids out there showing this (GT-1 is same multi-effects but for for guitar):

The controls are perfectly workable on the unit, but bit fiddly, with small display and bending down. The desktop software is better to set up & adjust patches.

The Gt-1B full manual is here:

hope this helps

Was just watching a YouTube video on GT-1B set up. Almost moved on thinking this is stuff I already know. Then the host says turn off your preamp when plugging into the front of your amp, you already have an Amp. OK got my attention. I've often wished I could plug into a clean unmodified channel when it's sitting right in front of me with the effects return jack on my amp. Yeah I know I probably should have figured that out or known but until recently never owned amps with effects send and return. Just posting cause it's kinda funny, but maybe there are others out there that overlooked the obvious like I did ....

After seeing the amp models available in the GT-1, GT-1B, and Pocket GT, then comparing that with the relative lack of specific amp models in the Katana Head Mk.II and Katana Bass 210, I have to wonder. Does anyone have thoughts on why Boss doesn’t get into modeling amps so much with the Katanas? Are they trying to establish a strong identity for Katana amps, as something other than a mimic of other amp brands that are already successful?

I'm getting one tomorrow. Currently I have a couple of fx pedals which I'll no longer be using. I currently go pre amp to the PA, so if I use the pre amp selection on the GT will this come through to the PA. I can adjust my stage sound on my amp but it's really only used as a monitor. I was going to plug bass in to GT, GT to amp input, DI selecting pre amp, to PA. Any other suggestions. Only using fx on about 4 songs but I suppose this could increase as I get to know the GT more.
Thanks.

I should have said I'm going to use about 3 fx on the GT for 4 songs and I'm getting rid of the pedals just for ease of use/set up. Hoping I can adjust the tone FOH with the GT as I think it's a bit too bassy at the present. The BL doesn't want to mess with the mixing desk.
Dig in the menus a bit. There is a master eq section in the GT-1b.

I have made 6 patches to use for certain songs playing live. Ive not used any pre amps in those patches, so if i connect bass to GT and GT to amp input, I then have amp set on pre amp and a DI to the mixing desk just checking the FOH will hear what the GT is doing. My amp and cab are my monitor. Is this the best way.

Yes, if you're running the GT to your amp, and amp DI out to FOH Mixer they will hear the GT.

Is there a way that i can set the built in pedal to wah only, instead of being an overall on/off switch? That way the pedal is just on all the time and i can engage the wah whenever. Google isnt being very helpful

Maybe from the front-panel, but I use the Tune Studio software on Windows: BOSS - Support - GT-1B - Updates & Drivers

You should be able to select what the pedal controls.

Also see the manuals: BOSS - Support - GT-1B - Owner's Manuals

I would be more specific, but I configured my patches, and have not fiddled with it for a while.

If you check the Manuals link provided by OldSchoolFlats especially check the 'Parameter Guide' as it contains more info vs the normal manual.

I do not fully understand your question but this might be part of what you are going for : On page 26 it says menu>preferences. Here you can set if the assignment of the expression pedal is per patch or system(global). To fully appreciate the GT1B you might have to learn to use the 'assign settings'.

Good luck!

Y'all, I could use some help with the GT-1B. It mostly stays in one place, I play at church weekly. We only play out a few times per year elsewhere, and so it doesn't get moved much.

I don't use batteries, I plug it in. None of my connections have changed for months. But recently, I was playing and in the middle of a song I lost all sound. Through isolating every component one at a time, I discovered it was the GT-1B that for whatever reason doesn't let sound come out. I didnt change any settings, it just stopped working mid-song. When I plug it in it still lights up, the tuner still works, etc, just makes no sound. Anyone have troubleshooting thoughts on this? It's not even 2 years old and I really dont want to have to buy something else so fast.

Something may have died. Maybe try headphones, but if no sound with various preset patches from line out or headphones, it is probably toast. I would assume you got a power-spike that blew something.

I assume you didn't press both the big tuner buttons in lower left corner and put it in tuner mode (which I think mutes by default)...
