Boss ODB-3 for Texas Blues / Southern Rock

A salesman at the music store was helping me pick out some pedals and seemed particularly fond of this one. I can't think of any songs I currently play that would use this sound and the only one I heard was some guy playing funk. Sounded cool, but I am not sure. I passed on it for now but it sticks in mind for some reason. What types of songs would be typically played with this pedal?

Depends on the amp you're using. People with all-tube amps, and no tweeters, seem to like what the ODB-3 offers for distortion--but people with hi-fi solid state amps, and tweeters in their cabs, generally hate the ODB-3 with a passion.

If you're in the tube-amp-no-tweeter category, then it'll work for the dirty Southern Rock sound, for sure.

The boss odb-3 is more suitable for hard rock and heavy metal. if you want an overdrive that's more suitable for texas blues and southern rock, the voodoo lab sparkle drive or the electro-harmonix english muff'n would be a good choice for that.

I have a solid state rig(I have a gallien-krueger half-stack by the way) and I personally like how the digitech bass driver sounds thorough my rig. the boss obd-3 is not too shabby in my opinion, but I like the digitech bass driver better. I also like how it sounds with a chorus pedal. it's gives me a grungy but heavy sound. in case you're wondering, I have a danelectro chorus pedal.

I am running a solid state Ampeg B2-RE with Aguilar 4x10 & 1x15. Most of the songs we are playing are pretty clean type that, if anything, I run a compressor and or chorus. I have an Engima Q Balls for a couple of songs and I have been using a Bad Monkey for a couple of songs but my rhythm guitar player stole it. Here is our set list:

ODB3 is a good pedal but gets lots of abuse in these parts, used one for many years but never really loved it, unlike some other pedals I have discovered. Playing with 2 gtr players really limits what and when you can use effects & not just distortion, not saying it's bad just sayin'. In a 4 piece I almost never use any distortion except for the ends of tunes for sustain, but in a Trio they get lots of use.
