I get it. The key for me has been to make a few default/starting-point patches-- so I have all the blocks I need ready to enable & tweak.

I was just waxing nostalgic about the death of the cursor diamond with an enter in the center. I miss that. Using a knob to move around the 2D effects path is weird even after you get used to it.

Yes I do not like the onboard SY1000 UI at all, though it is a considerable upgrade from the GR-55 UI in almost every way. The SY desktop editor is very slow on my computer (natively slow app to begin with, combined with a computer near the end of its life), but that's really what I need to be using more and just setting up a number of starting patches as you suggest

I've gotten pretty used to the UI. I think it's tricky because it is such an incredibly deep "instrument". They've struck a pretty impressive balance of complexity and ease of use. Though I don't love knobbing across/down across/down, and it's not as quick as having a dedicated vertical movement, the fact that they have a desktop editor kind of makes up for it.
