Double Bass Boston+Bass+the T=?

So I am moving from LA to Boston later this year and I plan to sell my car because I have heard that having a car in boston is just not very convenient.
I will be going to college so I can store my bass in the campus and use the T whenever I want.
I wanted to know if Basses are allowed or if they fit inside the T subway (green line mostly) because if I ever have to gig around town I dont want to have to take one of those van taxi's to move around (expensive).
Or if there are any other boston bassists here then what are some advice.

Unless rules have changed in the past few years, basses are allowed on the T. If you use a wheel, make sure to take it off before getting on. The only time you will definitely not be able to get on the T with your bass is right before or after Red Sox games, especially with the green line. Also, just be careful around rush hour, they can also get pretty packed. The bus is always another option. You just have to ask the driver to open the back door. The bus tends to be cheaper and sometimes stops in more convenient places. Good luck and enjoy Boston!

Don't get a car unless you are living in one of the outer suburbs or something. The T is manageable with the bass... busses are a pain to deal with. always crowded, etc. I used to take a bus to the blue line, transfer to green line every day for a couple of years. If you stay there you will prob want a car to manage gigging.

While you are getting a wheel, also get the warmest winter coat you can find...and then get something warmer.
If you are going to live in Boston you need 2 things if you are a bass owner.
#1 Get a humidifier!!!!!!
Winters here are dry and many buildings here are old fashioned. They have dry furnace heat that rises from the basement and dries out the entire building. I know 2 music schools here with that situation. This leads to allot of dryness related damage.
#2 Get insurance on your instrument. Bass repair is expensive so if the tops needs to come off at least you are covered.

Here's a trick you'd learn quickly any way...

The green line has two set of doors one on each side of the train. Where you want to be is in the non loading side door steps,,with you bass a step down from you.

Over the past couple of years, I've found most folks around here to be friendly and accommodating... Though they can be a bit inquisitive... I recommend bringing a book or headphones.
