That's just the way they make 'em. I only use the top one.

It balances OK, but due to it not having an upper horn, the reach to the 1st fret was a little uncomfortable for me, so I installed what's known as an ASE
(ASAT Strap Extension):

I love the look of bound edges, but even where there's an elbow contour cut in, the edge always seems to get in the way.

What's the story on the two strap pins on the bottom of the green ASAT body? Couldn't you find the right balance point?

G&L seems to make some ASATs that way. Not sure if it's a limited option, was only done for a specific period or ?? I had one like that a while back.
