I'd agree that boutique doesn't necessarily mean better, just different - they can be better or worse than others. Boss pedals aren't boutique, but pros use them because they're build quality is second to none - they haven't really changed in 30 odd years as they're designed not to break. That isn't always the case with boutique stuff.
