Box-ulele Bass build

Discussion in 'Luthier's Corner' started by josiah goldfish, Oct 2, 2013.

  1. Hello!

About a month ago was my birthday, and I went to London. Whilst in London, I tried out a Kala U-Bass and I LOVED it! So I decided to build one! I used a crappy art box that wasn't getting used for art. This rubbish box was awful as an art box, but very resonant and certainly good enough for a uke-bass! So, here it is!

    47mm nut.
    19" scale.
    18mm string spacing.

    Uhm, that is all. Enjoy!

    All the best,

I have only one word for you my friend, and that is BRILLIANT!!!
  3. Thank you, built it in the evenings after school over 3 weeks in my 8ft shed too :)

Nice. What did you use for strings?
  5. Aquila Thunderguts. A lot of people say they're sticky, but I guess I'm one of those lucky few who don't have acid-sweat :)

Nice! I spy a 1/4" jack... Piezo pickup, I presume? How's the acoustic volume (if any)?
  7. Piezo rod under the saddles. Acoustic volume is like the kala, it needs plugging in! Will hopefully wire up and record a sound-test this evening.

    Awesome !
  9. As promised, sound clip! The rattling is stuff being shook off the desk by some DEEP notes :D
  10. Very nice! You built the neck from scratch? What wood did you use?
  11. Hello again,
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, this was my 1st and a half neck (I had to hurriedly carve one in woodshop within an hour, so I don't count that one). The wood's cedrela: the same stuff as used in classical guitars.

(Cedrela is spanish cedar, for anyone wondering.)

Really cool project, Josiah. I've been wanting to make one of these.
