Then it's something on the Preamp side. Could be a s simple as a problem with the input Jack. Especially if the Instrument cable has been allowed to hang/pull on it. It's a good idea to always wrap the cable around a rack ear before plugging it in. Jacks attached to a PCB are especially problematic. I have had them "crack" the solder traces. Looks like a qualified tech ingoing to be needed.

I won't ever recommend someone tries to make their own repairs even though that's what I do. We all have our levels of how far we can go until a Tech is required...

If the LEDs that illuminate the EQ section flash, that's a good indication that the preamp supply is cutting out. The power resistors are the most common failure point; when the solder joints underneath fail, power becomes intermittent. There may also be oxidation on some of the internal connections which might be cured by carefully removing and reseating the connectors, paying close attention to ensure they are not misconnected. This occurred with my WT-500 and can cause the volume to drop or loss of power.

Heres are a few pics of my amp's guts.
As you can see the two resistance seem to have been already touched and glued to the board.
Some of of the capacities and tored transformer.

Whoever worked on it last went a little nuts on the wire wrapping of those resistors.

So yes, its seen a tech. But it doesnt mean they didnt do a great job and the issue has come back up. It's a design issue, I would have a tech move the resistors off the PWB. My 2 cents.

Also, the thermal switch has a bypass resistor on it that is discolored. That should be investigated. It's been awhile since I've worked on a 800, but I dont remember there being bypass resistors at all.

This is factory staking and is fine

Edit: I feel like my wording wasnt as clear as it could gave been...

Poor quality photo I found online. No bypass resistors, but this might be a later revision of the amp.

Don't do that!

This is why I recommend avoiding anything that has been modified or worked on by a non-qualified tech. It always costs a lot more to re-fix an amp like this, much more investigation is needed to catch other screw-ups.

I had a WT400 that was prone to thermal shutdown when I drove it hard with
a 4 ohm cabinet but the DI continued to work fine. Also when this happened the
front chassis was very hot to the touch.
I replaced the 4 ohm cab with an 8 ohm efficient cab and that resolved the issue.
The WT 800 is worth fixing IMHO.

I think the power supply has a problem. Those power resistors are the first thing to be fixed.
Most probably Q2 und Q77 have a problem and should be changed.
But of course hard to tell without having the amp on the bench.

What makes me a bit frightened is the cost of this work. I have a very good tech here but he has plenty of work and as he's very good I guess he wont be cheap... We ll see that.

If a truly qualified tech, a really good tech is also expensive, it may still be cheaper in the big picture because the amp gets fixed right and you don't pay for the tech to hunt and peck for the root cause.
