Did anyone see the Mythbusters Breaking Bad special on Monday? They tested Dissolving a body in a bathtub with hydrofluric acid and the Fulminated Mercury explosion from Season 1.
Sadly both were busted, much to Vince Gilligan's dismay. The Hydrofluric Acid didn't work and they used Sulfuric Acid with a "magic sauce" to accelerate the reaction and that still didn't eat through even a fiberglass tub. But I thought about it and if it DID work, they're not going to tell you that. As for the fulminated mercury (with, as Vince Gilligan said in his mind, Silver Mercury added in), the amount Walter was supposed to have used, it would have only caused a little smoke and a tiny explosion which would have injured everyone in the room but not blow out the windows. The amount they used TO blow out the windows would have killed everyone.
So as Vince said, "artistic license".
