bridge pickup pole pieces?

i have read that the space between the pole pieces has alot to do with the sound of a musicman pickup. What i'm wondering if putting the big magnets too close together sounds bad, or just different?
Like many others i am interested in replacing pickups in a fender deluxe precision. I am debating having a custom pick up made but have yet to contact anyone about it. Of coarse things that seem like a good idea in your head don't always work out, or they are very expensive. but i invision a large pole peice humbucker that fits with out routing. with a three way toggle. up - reverse pbass, middle - full on, down single coil back row. any guesses on what something like that might cost me.

I am pretty decided that if i upgrade the pickups that i am going to try out a delano pmvc in the neck position. I saw a custom pickup they made to replace the bridge pick up on my bass. Might go with that. I really want the humbucker to be more agressive but also sound thicker at the same time. I really like my ghost notes to be felt and heard
