Bring back the old form.

Outdated software that was so old the developer was dropping support for, which becomes a HUGE security risk.

To oversimplify it:
Most updates to software are security patches. When legacy software is no longer supported, as new security risks are found, they're not patched to protect against the new risks and leave gaping holes in the security. Similarly, if software is so old it requires an unsupported operating system to run on outdated servers, you run into similar issues with huge security holes in the OS and server, not just the app running the site.

And really, now that i've used the updated TB for more than half a week, it's not that different. All the old bits seem to be there, or at least the ones i use.

It's actually much more in line with how everything else on the internet works now. The old TB really felt stuck in 2004.

Yes there are a few bugs popping up: Teething pains.
Yes, it was slow for a bit: The site had to re-index the entirety of TB's history & storage.
Yes, some layout things changed: That's the nature of progress. Also, it seems like as a lot of the layout and design options are found to be different, a lot of the differences are being changed by the admins/mods to be more in line with how things used to work. (It looks like they got rid of the voting option which i liked, but it seemed like most people got confused by.) :(
Ah, yes, I suppose this could have been a poll...

I also appreciate that the switch has been fairly graceful and it seems all old content preserved. While there are a lot of banal repeat threads, etc., TB is a valuable and unique archive of everything about bass.

Y’all should accept that upgrades like this are 100% not able to be reversed. There are certain patches and adjustments that can be made to new sites like this but reverting back to the old one is not an option so please learn to accept it and move on with life. It’s like when you get a new car where the layout is completely different or some other major change that you need to get used to… It’s really annoying at first but after a while, you won’t even notice it anymore. You can dig your heels in and complain about it till the end of time but you’re just going to frustrate yourself. There were things about the old site that were annoying too when it was first deployed that we all forgot about after a while as well.
I don’t buy a new car that I don’t like.
I don’t pay for subscriptions to things I don’t like, so TB is no longer a desirable thing for me.

Changing things to work with newer technology does not require making the product unfavorable.
My subscription will fade into the sunset, making room for new members.
Support ended for the (very old) previous software on which this forum was built, and it had to be upgraded. It would take hundreds of hours of coding by a skilled person or team to make this site look like the old one, and there's little value in making such a massive investment. Make sense?

When you buy a new car, do you intend to insist that the dealership sell you the new car, but modify the new car to look and feel exactly like your 1997 Buick LaSabre? When they scoff at you, do you intend to take your business elsewhere?

The site has been changed for a while now. It’s difficult to take complaints and threats of leaving seriously when someone is just noticing. That user no longer checking in every couple of weeks is really going to impact the flow of the site… lol.

I’m looking forward to the “What happened?” posts in about 3-6 months. The real power users!

The only constant is change. Roll with it, or get rolled over by it.
It's not rocket surgery, it's a new look with a few changes in the order and location of buttons to push in order to get what you want.
A bowl of peas has replaced the carrot.

The website runs on a platform that can only be customized to a certain point to look like the old website. If you pay for for a web hosting fee, hire or do the coding and work with the owners to use the same databse to present the content and ENSURE the SECURITY and PERFORMANCE of the users that prefer NO CHANGE. If I am the owner maybe I'll allow it if you add on top of that a hefty yearly fee :D

No different from "I like my old car and prefer that when I get a new one, I will rip-off the emissions controls "

What will be useful is filing an objective bug report rather than threatening, "i will cancel my subscription or I am leaving the site," but you do you.

We can still post and read about basses. We can still sell and buy bass gear with a targeted audience and relatively cheap fee (specially if you did a lifetime membership). The sky did not fall.

It is not much harder to use. What I would suggest thiough is that thge mods do a simple write up / user guide how to set the user preferences to mimic the old feel and a list of what things had been removed and will never come back and put it as a sticky, then do a mass mailing or messaging so that the users can read that first and reduce threads like this.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you *could* (in theory) code this site to be exactly like the old UI. It would take hundreds or thousands of hours of coding to do it, but it can be done. Nearly everything is customizable, its just that some of it is REALLY easy to adjust and some of it is very difficult. I'm sure the staff at TB will make the most important updates as the site goes along, but there will be other items that just won't match the previous look and feel.

I wonder if these people complaining so fervently about the new UI are still running Windows 95, or how they function in 2024 if a simple forum software update throws off their lives this badly.

I appreciate when change is necessary. I am finding the new format awkward to navigate. That may just be familiarity with what was before, but I find I have to make more keystrokes to get to the particular forum to review threads than before. To me, that is a step backwards, not forwards.

Yuuuuuuup, the security is a huge part of it I have to assume. I recall that's why they had to drop the TB mobile app years and years ago (be still my heart, looking through classifieds on my phone in college lectures. What a thrill). We already have issues from the normal security concerns of having old old old unused accounts with old passwords and people cracking them. Don't want the site itself to be a giant security risk either.

For the look? Yeah, not thrilled but I'll get used to it. There's this perception that IT personnel can just magic a front end on top of a new system to make it 1 to 1 identical to the way people are used to doing things. Or that they can just "connect systems" simply by just pointing at both at the same time and saying "Connect, ye systems". It's not that simple. For the more obstinate, the mods and decisionmakers know how crotchety this community is. I 100% believe they made every effort to make it as close to identical as possible to avoid the "old man shakes fist at sky" complaining that was inevitable.

On a lighter note though, I got to see my first "That does it, I'm quitting TB over this!" post in years.

It definitely reminds me of the people I ran into when doing contractor IT who show up with a 15 year old Vista or XP laptop that was mid grade at best when new and ask why it's slow. Then when it was wiped, set up new, had their files put back on it, they get mad that it doesn't feel as fast as they remember it.

The fact that the site is running is the biggest step forwards; you just don't realize that.

Would you rather have no talkbass or would you rather have to get used to a new user interface with the understanding that many features will return in the future?
