Honestly, I didn't think it was too bad. I wish that it would have been a two part episode for something so significant, it just felt rushed in a thirty minute episode, like there wasn't that much tension. They handled Alicorn Twilight pretty well though, having Princess Celestia granting her the title. Honestly, knowing that an Alicorn can grant something like that MAY mean that they are also capable of giving it up as well, and Celestia has finally chosen a successor so that she and her sister can live their lives out. Or something, I'm speculating.

Overall, it's not the end of the show, but a wrong turn in season four could spell doom.

Really? Maybe it is just the shock, but I honestly think this was the worst episode so far. The songs were crap, the story was rushed, there was no setup for any of the first half of the show, and I thought they handled the accession of Twilight poorly at best. To anyone who thinks it was done well, I pose this question: when was it ever hinted that Equestria was ever a meritocracy?

Right now, one of two things needs to happen in the first couple episodes. My preference is that TS looses her princess status, but we know the likelihood of that happening. The other thing, oddly enough, comes from the bastion of intelligence known as 4chan. I will quote it directly for your pleasure.


"What needs to happen in the S4 pilots:
In my humble opinion that is. There were so many threads that were tied up and not tied together again that the show staff simply must do a few things in the S4 2 parter pilots.
Explicitly explain Alicorns and their purpose in general.
What are they really? Are they just pretty princesses that are there to be pretty and motherly and friendly to all, or are they something more perhaps? We thought we had Alicorns all figured out up until A Canterlot Wedding, and now it's all completely shattered after Magical Mystery Cure, and we can't see any clear picture. This point needs to be explained, because it's not only essential to the story now, it's essential to Twilight as a character, and what we're supposed to expect from her in the future.
Change the general premise.
I personally think that a show about Slice of Life like this, should never really derail from it's status quo. There's no definite continuity between episodes, except a general timeline between seasons. However, they've gone down the rabbithole now, and might as well explore the entirety of it. There's no going back now. They need to set up a new premise that makes Princess Twilight a good and, most of all, belivable change.
Give the Elements of Harmony and their bearers a new purpose
So, if we are to interpret Magical Mystery Cure correctly, the Elements of Harmony and it's bearers ultimate purpose was to make Twilight take the final step to ascend to Alicornhood. This simply can't be. There needs to be something more. Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy might still be friends with Twilight Sparkle, and they are still the bearers of the Elements of Harmony, but they no longer have anything going for them. Now that Twilight is a princess, her friends are now her subjects. If this is not to be a bad thing, they need to be given a new purpose.
If none of this happen, then eff the show."

I honestly went into this expecting the absolute worse, and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't terrible. Yeah, the songs weren't the best, it was rushed and there was no setup for the first part (Which could have been fixed with a two-part episode, which they decided to not do for some reason), but I think it was alright. Definitely a weak closer, but there have been episodes that I will probably never watch again from season one as well, so it's not an enormous deal.

i think the absolute best thing they could do would be to not make a big deal about this at all, keeping her the absolute same and explaining the whole alicorn thing once and for all. It is nice that we finally do have an official designation for them now though.


OR better yet: dream sequence. Soap opera alllll up in my ponies!

I'll be blunt, I've always thought that not keeping Lauren Faust was a big mistake. Right now, it looks like they are lining up to Jump the Shark. I'm hoping that's not the case. However, LF has been saying all along we need to "Trust the writers." One of the things I've liked about the show so far is that a) Equestria is not a safe place, b) things can go wrong and c) just about anyone can relate to the show. Well, at least to some degree. I hope they keep that from S1 and 2.

I think the real issue isn't that she is now an alicorn or a princess.

The issue is CAN the writers work with that and still produce a good show. That will be the deciding factor.

I'm not sure that Twilight becoming a princess isn't too far from *something* that Faust might approve of in the sense that personal growth and change is part of the Hero's Journey. As Faust noted that she wanted more adventure stories, one could assume that adventure leads to growth and change. The first three seasons were about Twilight learning to be a good friend and a slice of life in ponyville... I think season 4 on will be about twilight learning to be a good leader, mixed in with many slice of life and adventure stories. I think it can work, while still providing forward momentum for the Mane Six and Equestria.

Two quick things... the Mane 6 have never really been equal, Twilight was always the mane character and had a special relationship with Sun-Butt... Rarity and Twi have magic, Fluttershy and Dashie can fly, Pinkie Pie has well... chaos magic for lack of a better world, and Applejack is well... she's tough and strong. But they all celebrate their differences and accomplishments rather than being jealous.

The second thing is that (based on watching Ballad of the Brony), one of the ponies in previous generations was made a princess... then she didn't like being sperate from her friends, so she decreed that everyone is a princess... while I strongly doubt that they would make everyone an Alicorn (which would be stupid), but she may find a way to keep things equalitarian with her friends.

Regardless, season 4 can't get here fast enough... even equstria girls might be good. We'll find out.

I know they were never really "equals." That said, the show kind of played them as such, and never really touched too much on Twilight's inherent superiority. In other words, she was a very talented, but ostensibly normal unicorn. Twilight's accession pretty much made it impossible for there to be any semblance of equality between the ponies.

I agree that S4 can't get here fast enough. Those first couple episodes will decide whether I will continue watching the show or if it has indeed jumped the shark.

Equestria Girls? Well, that is still so up in the air, I have no distinct opinion.

Boy, I just saw my first couple episodes of this show, and I admit there is some charm to it... But I still fail to see the hype among grown men... I'm very interested in hearing what has made you a fan, given the show is obviously aimed at young girls (and some boys too).

On a side note, I like Rainbow Dash best of all the main ponies. She's a tomboy, but kinda cute nevertheless. And has unending energy!

The hype is that it's a technically well-made show (with much better animation production than most shows), the plot is fairly interesting from the get-go, the characters are not as one-dimensional and stereotypical... plus, personally, sometimes I just really need to laugh at something silly. This series works.

RD and unending energy? Obviously Pinkie didn't go into full cartoony mode in those first episodes. :D

I think one of the biggest things about the show is you go in expecting absolute toddler level crap.
Then you find that the show is fairly well written and just relaxing and enjoyable and it just catches you by surprise compared to most things that are out there to watch nowadays.

I've been fan of animation for a long time. Usually it's the artwork that draws me into a show. I find that there's a certain quality that MLP:FIM art has that I really enjoy. I like the characters and their interactions, Lesson Zero as an example (my favorite). Yes, some of the storylines are very obviously for young girls, but I think that the writers go out of their way to be inclusive of the whole family (as much as they're allowed to). And it's fun.

Oh, and in BronySpeak, you just say "Rainbow Dash is best pony." :)

I just saw on the BronyCon documentary, the excerpt from Faust that she wanted Twilight to become Celestia's successor... so the Alicorn thing was planned from the beginning.

As to why the show is good, first off, awesome job for even trying it out. That's not easy for guys to do, so kudos.

There is a lot to like about the show... the main thing I think is that the main cast is just rather likable... if they were people, it would still be a fun show to watch. The writing is good, the show is well drawn, the songs are amazing, and it's actually pretty funny at times (I will also admit to having cried at parts).

A second part is the fandom... bronies tend to be creative, funny, and good people... they are fun to hang around with and they create great music and art... I find the earnest desire to create something... refreshing.

My two bits.
