Bronze Strings on an Electric Bass??? Whaa?

I put some D'Addario Phosphor Bronze acoustic bass strings on my acoustic bass a few weeks back, and they still sound great (bright, warm and full). I was thinking that the next time I restring all my basses I would try them on one of my electric basses as well.

Has anyone tried this before? Are there any problems with these strings not working with passive pickups (I don’t know why there would be but…)? Would it be a waste of money for some reason or another?

They won't conduct electricity nearly as well, and will thus be much quieter than normal strings. They'll also sound thin and tinny. Not worth it.

Well, the strings on an electric bass don't have to conduct electricity at all, so that's not an issue in any way. However, the bronze strings don't have nearly as much ferrous metal in them, so thier magnetic signal is a lot lower than nickle, nickle plated steel, or stainless steel strings. Essentially, the only thing the pickups will sense on bronze strings is the steel inner core wire.

So, don't waste your money-

Thanks. I knew there had to be some reason, otherwise at least a few famous players would be doing it. The bronze strings sound very rich on the acoustic bass (richer than nickel or stainless steel). Anyway, I'm not going to waste my money. Thanks again.

You can try the Optima gold strings. They sound "warm, bright and full". So this could be what you're looking for....

Not necessarily.I don't know the retail price in the US, but I can find them in Europe between 28 to 34 euros. That's still more expenseive than your average string, but what a great tone and durability!
