Broughton Audio Super Thread

Curious to hear your thoughts on the apex
I liked what I heard last night. Definitely like it more than the Monocomp. It is a little finicky to dial in though. Still need to spend more time with it.

I forgot how fun the SVD is though. It might stick around this time. We’ll see though.

Definitely more finicky than the Monocomp, but so worth it for clean compression. PRO TIP: use the HPF as a tone control - sometimes if you just think of it that way you get "what you want" a little quicker.

Dibs if it doesn't :woot:

Some toys to play with this weekend!

I thought you had or tried the Apex.
It is a little tricky to figure out at first but that’s only because it’s hands down the finest unique featured transparent compressor that I’ve ever used and has been on my board ever since I finally had that “ah ha!” Moment and listened to how the HPF side chain worked with the threshold.
Considering the chips been discontinued, I wish I grabbed a second one.

Will trade mildly tasty Broughtons for an Apex.

Yes. The hpf and threshold work together. I keep my threshold anywhere from 12 to 1 o’clock. Ratio i keep from 3:1 to 4:1 and hpf to taste.

you can’t really go by the leds. Even when the leds aren’t moving you still get the sparkly crisp sound.

I have two :D

I actually looked at your settings as a starting point. It sounds damn good especially with the HPF SC near or at fully counterclockwise.

Have you tried the Empress Bass Comp? I think it is the best transparent comp on the market IF (BIG IF) you don’t get the static noise with your setup... I plan on buying another one when they release a revised version this summer. The Apex definitely has an Empress BC vibe to it.

I have not. I want to now. I don’t get noise with my set up. Even running 20 strong on the board with 3 being tube pedals my system is quite as a church mouse. Some of the guitarists I occasionally play with are killing the unwanted noise. Seems like there’s always one of them that’s oblivious to it. Like “Dude can you just switch your channel while we’re trying to talk please?” Thanks. :bored:

I’m not talking about noise although that is funny. There’s a design flaw with the BC but it can be avoided if you play a fully active bass or place a buffer before it. Some people have stated it works fine with passive instruments. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. There’s more info on the matter in the Empress Mk. II thread.

Well the Metro 16 was really not cutting it anymore, went back to the Duo17. First round of Tetris complete, lots of good pedals in the losers group (top), and Signal Blender may lose its spot to the FFxLoop... tough choices. Not a bad Broughton crop in less than a year? All but one bought from Josh, too, and in the end not many crushed dreams remain!

Nice acquisitions! If you haven’t done it already, try a Fuzz (do you have one? Gated?) into one of the Signal Blender’s loops, the Broughctave into the other and then out to the JoshWah and report back the nastiness that ensues.

Archetype update:

I’m usually quick to formulate an opinion on gear. Up to this point I’ve only used the Archetype through headphones. Well, today I finally got to run the Archetype through the power section of my Skunkworks SVT into a Bergie 610. I played to a couple songs, messed around with the EQ during and in between songs, paused the music and instantly smiled ear to ear. I took a moment and thought to myself, “This is quite possibly the best preamp I have ever played through!” I ended the sappy moment and threw the music back on and played grooves for the next hour. In my opinion, the Archetype is the best product Josh has ever released. It’s versatile. It can get P15 and SSDI tones easily. Then it can do it’s own thing with what seems endless tonal options. It has awesome dirt on tap with no loss of low end. I don’t plan on ever getting rid of this thing. It’s just so damn impressive. Amazing job, Josh! I appreciate your thoughtful R&D and implementation to market on this one hell of a preamp.

As if I didn't want one bad enough already. If it can do P15, SSDI and more, it's a no-brainer for me.
