Broughton Audio Super Thread

The Omni does have a side chain filter, although it is fixed. The Omni seemed to come very close to the same level of compression as my Cali76 with the HPF at 100% when playing the B string. At some point I’ll hook each of them up to a DAW and get some exact measurements (I’m out of commission with covid right now).
I hope it's not hitting you too hard. The Freeman household was hit over the holidays. The wife got off easy, our 1 year old daughter got it hard, and I got walloped. Thankfully it went down i stages. First the wife. Few days later, our daughter (absolutely the scariest moments of my life). Thankfully, I didn't get sick until everyone was better. But when I did.........oooooh it was bad. I'm just thankful I wasn't sick when our child was.
Here's hoping you feel better soon Derek.

thanks man, feel worn out like a bad flu, getting my TV time in (that Peacemaker show is great!). I expect my kids to also get sick too, as I just started feeling unwell a couple days ago. Horrible timing, my LA-1A arrived on Thursday :D will have a good shootout once I’m mobile again

Mmmm classic hearty basic fried breakfast. Have a nice weekend.

To me, compressor is a type of sound processing that shouldn’t change your inherent tone too much, unless deiberately going for a squashing effect (which is not what I like). Natural tube compression and sealed cabinets did it for me so I focused more on my plucking technique instead of pedal compression to even out dynamics for a long time. But the reviews of transparency of Empress Bass Comp eventually made me get one and it does that in spades. Sidechain hpf and mix controls make it super versatile and I can do that subtle transparent thickening very well.

Omni is a very good compressor as well and if it also had sidechain filtering and I only had one board, it could potentially replace Empress.

Both offer parallel compression, both do light compression really really well and both are keepers.

I agree based on my comparisons so far. Omni has more control over the ratio, but I really like the adjustable sidechain HPF on the Empress.

I also really like the sound of the mid-boost mode on the Empress. I can think of a lot of situations where I could just leave it on all the time, and maybe not even bother with an overdrive pedal.

All that being said, I don't think I've found the ideal spot in my chain for the Omni yet, so the tests continue.

Waymint, MuthaFunk's tutorials didn't cover surface prep...
Get yerself a mild NON detergent compressor oil fer yer compressor. Flush it good and warm her up for a half hour or so and wipe clean. Keep her good and lubed and wipe clean after usage. I like to break up some larger deposits with a course salt. Yer not gonna wanna use any soaps and if ya hafta sink it in water to clean, yer gonna hafta start all over.
