Broughton Audio Super Thread

……Omni will definitely be on the board this time (replacing Cali76-CD).

I actually sold my Cali76cb after grabbing an Omni, I felt like the Omni had that vibe covered.
I still have a big box cali76 (with the lundahl transformer) though.

………Finding it hard to like anything other than the Apex for a long time now.

I agree the Apex has a certain magic that’s tough to beat.
It’s about how it feels to play through it for me that’s so satisfying.
And I do enjoy how sonically it adds a little magic without getting in the way of anything.
The Omni seems to add a little thickness.
It took me some time to figure out how I liked mine set, but that’s kind of par for the course with a new comp.
It seems like I always need to throw away whatever I think I know about settings and start from scratch.

Having the itch for a monocomp.. again

I was considering letting one go until I experimented with placement.
I usually prefer running comps after the amp flavor pedals and the monocomp was meh in that role.
After moving it up front (but still post dirt) it really came to life for me and I suddenly understood why y’all had been digging it.
It’s definitely got some mojo going!

They do definitely cover a lot of the same ground. I think I actually prefer the Omnicomp on bass, but I've kept the Cali76cd around because I also really like it on guitar... it plays really well in the FX loop on my guitar amp (Supro Blues King 1x12).

I've been through a bunch of pedal compressors for live work, some inexpensive and some top-end. The Omnicomp is my all-time fave. It pushed the Empress Bass Comp off my board--and I really like that one a lot.

By way of point of reference, my goal with a pedal compressor in front of my amp is to restrain the dynamics enough to sound polished but still have the notes jump out when I dig in. Not looking to the compressor for coloration.

Makes sense, i haven’t found a source my big box cali76 doesn’t sound good on.
I’ve got a doc Lloyd pdr that’s been dedicated to guitar since it arrived and it’s worked great but I’ve also enjoyed running a monocomp on guitar as well.
Haven’t ever gotten around to trying the apex or Omni with guitar as they are both pretty much perfect in their roles in the bass rigs.

24 volts or bust - I didn't have a single piece of gear that would make that thing clip, even big preamps. Some don't like the baked in attack/release, whatever its set at, I like

I'm gonna be moving a 76CB soon, as the Omni pushed it off. I might be swapping it for an Empress, though... I think I need two compressors for various boards, but I think I'm ready for something new. S'pose I could go for a second Omni, but that seems gratuitous.

Truthfully I think that in isolation (i.e. bass > pedal > interface), the 76 sounds a little nicer than the Omni, but once it's been placed in a signal chain with other things that color the tone more, the Omni has a punch to it that is more pleasing to me.

I liked the Cali76 CB, but it was noisy and very sensitive to what I put in front of it. I replaced it with an Effectrode LA-1A. Great comp if you have room on the board for it.

The Bistro does not have a good Thanksgiving turkey on the menu? What a shocker!

I moved and my custom built smoker was modular and could not be relocated.
I did smoke this bird two years ago. Yeah give me an Italian thanksgiving all day. Traditional Turkey and overcooked mushy vegetables just don’t appeal to me.
