Broughton Audio Super Thread

Mine is stuck in chitown.. I guess because of soccer? Or some rain a thousand miles south? I dunno. Been a while so I assume its my turn.
Thanks for taking one for the team. I'll happily pass the burden of lethargic shipping along :)

I am really enjoying the Sonoran, but it has made me realise how great the Super Watt really is. The Sunray gets a lot of plaudits, and for good reason, but I think the Super Watt is by far my favourite Broughton pedal. It just makes everything sound better - even just my naked bass tone.

I'm still experimenting with the Sonoran, but it's definitely a keeper. I just need to figure out which pedals no longer make the cut on my board……
For sure. Super Watt is outstanding. I use it more than the Sunray since it's an always-on pedal. But they provide such different effects I am not sure I can pick a favorite. My top five, in alphabetical order, remain:
  • FFXL
  • Quicksilver
  • Signal Cypher
  • Sunray
  • Super Watt
Honorable Mention:
  • Bass Box (deserves tenth-anniversary treatment with updated clean parallel channel like the Azure Drive received)
  • Chimera
  • Messenger Jr.
  • Sentinel
  • Studio One

I spent some more time with it. It compares volume wise to my Super Stack pedal, which I've always noticed is the quietest pedal preamp I own.

Sonoran is equal, a little dirtier. Through the Mini Fridge is good and thick, dark.

I did have to turn the volume on the Baby Sumo from my normal 9-10 o'clock to noon for reference.
Comparing the 400+ and F2B preamps, they both use half of the tube before, and the other half after the eq. Aside from the parameters (and shifts) they look very alike

In your description, your "level and gain dimmed" you mean the both gain and master on the pedal? And if so to reach clean output, pull the gain back to 10 o'clock? Yielding about -10 db less in output?

Im setting up a loop now, (probably the most jinxing thing I could do..). If so, can plug in +10db while the ol laptops out

(Im not suggesting this until confirmed ok, but I wonder what a 5751 swapped out could do for clean headroom if you have to go so high on gain.)

Also a curious question, if you pull the entire eq back, does it kill the signal all together, or at least close?
Yes, I meant Volume/Master/Level and Gain dimed. Pulling the Gain back to about 10 cleaned it up, but was about 10 dB quieter than bypassed.

If I do turn all the EQ down, there is no signal, but that's somewhat to be expected, my Mesa 800D amp is based off of the 400 and operates the same way.

Picked up a nano board here a while back- thanks, Kellen- managed to snag a new Cioks Sol on the Verb for under $200. Just put it together and -HORRORS- the Sol sits on it's butt. No bueno…will overheat. Did a quick search on the innerweb, looking for feet that will raise the shebang, and found listed right there at the top a thread by Evan the icevan here on TB… Ordered some feet, they arrive tomorrow supposedly, in and out for a song. Saves me a trip to the HD.

If you're out there, Evan, I for one miss you, buddy.

Theres a fretless MB2 five up here for a song, third price reduction. Stunningly beautiful. Ive already got three RAs, my love for them is well documented. Wife is gone for the day, ima plug in soon, picked up a handle of Makers Mark. Ive already got a fretless 5 NYC, another beautiful fretless five GGi, if i get hammered today and buy this, I will possibly wake up a eunuch.

Pray for Gorilla. My boys aren't doing me much good these days. Im 67 and yell at the Sun. Losing them would possibly serve to prevent any future road rage encounters and a switch from basso profundo to alto could make me more socially acceptable. No more shaving, too, so there's that.

Someone please buy this thing.

Alright folks, got my Sonoran today!
1000031749.jpg

I played with it through headphones for about an hour. It sounds good. I too get a surprisingly low output volume. Some details:
* The Gain knob does nothing discernible till about noon. Fully CCW I already get some breakup, and that's with my Devon bsss plugged-in direct (moderate output, played passive). Only starting around 1:00 does breakup/distortion increase.
* With the Volume knob dimed and EQ flat (Treble Shift switch up) I get unity gain with the Gain knob around 2:00.
* A little bass boost helps bumping output volume, like Bass around 9:00.

Edit: tried both 9 V and 12 V, similar behavior.

Potential disaster circumvented by the wife's premature return. We had a thunderstorm pass through- messed up her plans- i always unplug when possible. Managed to just crack that Makers and play for five minutes afterwards.

Can't get my drink on. Keeping the family jewels, though. Got that going on for me, which is good.

My Broughton Shaker pint glass just arrived. I loaded my cart in anticipation of a Sonoran bloodbath that thankfully never materialized and couldn't be bothered with tryna delete it. The packaging was first rate. Worth $5. The glass features an impressive, bold BROUGHTON print, right below where I'd want the bottom of the head to be. It's a work of art.

Are any of you having any problems with your Shaker pint glasses? The thing seems almost idiot proof.

How well does it track? ….

I've yet to fill it. Got a lot going on. Im not waiting to hear the buzz, though. I may put water in it, just to see if it works. It may seem like cheating but i could put some ice in it. I have some bottled water. Its not what it was made for, i imagine, but it should work.
