Lord if a black 32" J with a maple board shows up I'm not afraid to fight. =0)

I like to just look to see if things come down the pike that I either forgot about or always wanted to try. Distantly followed by 'need', lol. Very rarely a "latest new thing" type search.

Back in 2007-2008, the Canadian dollar was trading really strong versus the US dollar, they were almost at par in the market, so it was a great opportunity to buy used stuff from US sellers and ship it to Canada, where I live. Compared to our local used market at the time it was still cheaper, even after shipping costs and customs brokerage were taken into account than it was to buy used local. So I bought quite a few things, and got in the habit of browsing every day, multiple times a day. Now I mostly look for great deals, as even with our dollar *not* anywhere near par, it still sometimes makes economic sense, especially given the broader marketplace of TB versus my local market. Need a maple P neck? Check Classifieds, if none, wait a day or two. Need a Fender American Standard bridge? Same. I’ll buy parts or pedals, small relatively inexpensive things, but the days of me buying basses or amp’s or cabinets here are over. I’ll still look - but I’m not buying. Unless it’s a stupid, killer deal that I can flip.

Mostly just browsing, price checking.

Looking for cabs/combo amps, which are usually local deals or too expensive to ship- so I rarely see one I can/would buy.

Looking at jazz basses, but since it’s for a backup it’ll probably be a cheap Squier- so between shipping cost busting the budget, and wanting to try em, local wins again.

I look at P basses, because they’re cool. I’m especially interested in Jazz necks. I don’t want a second one, but it’s a unique enough mod that I like to see what others have done.

So, What do I buy? Parts, accessories.

Wasting time at work should have been an option, but I chose 'just browsing' as it was the closest thing to that.

I’m retired but i go stir crazy with nothing to do so i fill my days with various projects and jobs making things for people. I also spend time going through old barns and houses looking for things i can flip. For a time it was a full time thing and i was buying the entire contents houses. It was satisfying and profitable but i allowed it to become a full time obligation so i scaled back to beating the bushes for odd items i can flip.

I’m on vacation with the family at the moment. Even so, I’m often using opportunities to glance (surreptitiously) at the classifieds whenever I can...it’s always the way that the few specific items I’m looking for always seem to be listed and sold when I’m not looking....

Once in a while just to browse for curiosity or get an approximate value for what I want to sell.

It's been a while since I went shopping there, though in the past I've done quite a few buys and sells.

Education and History!

I’ve only been playing a few years and still just a serious casual player. I have good but basic gear (a few Squiers, Ampeg BA110 and an old Fender Rumble75). I’m saving to get a good P bass in the $800-$1000 range but not close to pulling the trigger.

In the meantime, I search local classifieds for stores, pawn shops etc for places I can go to put my hands on as many interesting basses as possible. Instruments I read about on TB but would never have a chance to experience otherwise. Pedullas, Hagstrom, vintage Fenders, MM Stingrays, Huntington Supros, old Peaveys, Ibanez Roadstar, older L-2000, Jack Casady etc., old Fender, Ampeg, Acoustic amps have all found their way into my hands as well as the normal GC stuff. Nothing exotic for you experienced players but all new and exciting to me.

I search national classifieds for education as to availability, pricing trends and reading about different mods made on various instruments. And as you guys get tired of your older, heavier gear, I get a history lesson reading up on the old stuff you’re selling. So at the moment, classifieds are a source of enjoyment and education.

Although, now I have a lengthy GAS list (12 basses, 5 amps) and a specific P bass (57AVRI) I really, really want to see if it’s right for me....what is happening?
