Brubaker Brute Club, Part 2

I've been off the 5s for the last two years. My old original band wants to come of hiatus so I needed another 5. Just picked up a JJX-5... Great neck, nice B, good pickups, average pre-amp, well balanced and all that for under $700. The bass gets part way to my old F-Bass BN5 but for much less $$$. After about an hour of playing time the verdict is still out as I needed a five and can't sink $1500-$2500 in another bass right now this was a great deal on a brand new bass. So far so good.

I just received this from TB'er Shooter McGavin yesterday and am i stoked! Mods include Barts and OBP-3 (courtesy Robear22!). I'm a Fender 5 guy and this feels REALLY comfy. I havent had a maple fretboard in almost 17 years, I'm actually digging the difference!

Big thanks to Shooter, my house was burglarized last week and pretty much all of my gear was stolen save a couple items. He gave me a great deal!

That's good news! I've always been a Fender 5 guy too, I was wondering how these felt in comparison.

The fretboard seems much flatter in radius than a fender. The bridge string spacing is just so slightly wider as well, but its not that big of an adjustment. I'm pretty impressed with the the whole neck thru/bolt-on thing that's going on. you can actually feel the higher register notes. I may not be describing it correctly, but that's what i'm experiencing.

Overall, pretty solid. Then again, mine came equipped with some great mods. So far, i've been able to trace it back pretty far here on TB... There is no serial number.. that intrigues me.. :eyebrow:

You have one of the originals that was at first sold directly out of Kevin Brubakers' shop. I too have one of these and I believe mine was the last one sold out of his shop before distro and mangement of the Brute line was switched to AP Intl. My point is that mine did not have a serial number as well. I added my own, the delivery date of the bass. I know your axe sounds great with those mods. Mine is still stock.

I've had my Brute now for a week and its ideal! I can get so many different tones from the OBP-3 and the Barts. The flat radius fingerboard has taken some getting used to, but other than that, i have to say i'm impressed.

These are some pretty darn cool basses for under a grand. The build quality is fantastic too. I'm starting to get the mojo that happens with the neck thru/bolt on thing. Lower register notes seem more defined than say a Fender bolt-on.. YMMV however :p

No switch yet. These basses are ripe for pre and PUP upgrades. However they sound awesome as is. I added a 3 way coil splitter to mine for the MM pickup. single coil/series/single coil. The SC is a treat to slap on if you slap. The black satin finish on the back of the neck feels really good. Much better than a natual satin fnish.

There is another female Brubaker Artist out there. She is my FB friend as well. Check out Kate Deustsh on FB and on youtube. She too will be sporting a Single Cut as well as her JJX4. She's also on the Brubaker Basses FB Page.

I'm having a Brubaker KXB5 made and it too will have the black satin finish on the back of the neck. It just makes so much sense after you have played on a bass with that feature.

Wow that's unfortunate. I feel lucky to have one. SC's are not easy to pull off. Maybe there is a sliver lining to this. Someone might be able to get a good deal on let's say a B stock SC.
